History of Australia Answers

1.Who were the Indigenous people of Australia? The Aborigines. They crossed over approximately 40,000 years ago .

2.What is Dreamtime? Dreamtime is a large part of the Aborigine religion. All of the different tribes had a belif in Dreamtime. They believe that life came from Dreamtime

3. Who was the first explorer to colonize Australia? Captain James Cook- Not the first one in the area

4.Why did the British send people to Australia? There was a lot of overcrowding in the prisons. Ironically, this is the same reason that Georgia was founded.

5. What was life like for the convicts? Life was very harsh. They were treated poorly and often punished. They were forced into labor.

6.What happened to the indigenous people? Many were forced off their land. Some were force into labor. Many were killed. However, most died of disease.

7. Why were non-convicts coming to Australia? People had heard of the cheap land and the ability to make money. Many people immigrated there looking for a new start and property.

8. What are settlers? Many people, both with the support of the British Government and without, went to lands and claimed them as their own. The government was happy to give them the land because they needed settlers on the continent.

10. What were some of the problems that came with the higher population? The aborigines lost more of their land and was relocated to useless land in the dessert. Crime and unsavory activities increased as well. There also was a growing discontent for the British Government.
