Recycle & Reward Scheme 2016-17

Recycle & Reward Scheme 2016-17 Recycle & Reward Scheme 2016-2017 DCLG agreed to a new approach for 2016 – 2017 for MKC to engage and work with Town & Parish Councils focusing on getting more food waste out of black sacks into green bins This will be the first reward/ recognition scheme where a council works with Town & Parish Councils This approach is seen as a unique and DCLG are looking to us for feedback Who knows MK’s residents best….? YOU!

Feedback and Research results Recycle & Reward Scheme 2016-17 Feedback and Research results In other authorities supplying a small roll of starter caddy liners can help (but are too expensive to continue in the long term) Up to 40% of material in black sacks could be food waste Only 25% of food waste is put in the green bins For some residents the “yuk” factor and reluctance to change their food waste habits is an issue Some residents think they are doing the right thing by not putting food waste in the green bin Meat, fish, dairy, bread, cooked food waste and other non-vegetable food wastes are most likely to be put in the black sack rather than the green bin Not all green bins are labelled with what can/cannot go in

Town & Parish Council Recycle & Reward Scheme 2016 – 2017 Each parish and town council is tasked with increasing the amount of food waste collected during the period from 1 December 2016 to 28 February 2017. You will receive a cash lump sum for committing to the scheme and there will be a bonus payment if food waste tonnage increases in your Parish over the 3 months. Additionally, there will be the following awards: Gold Award: £5,000 for the most improved Town/Parish Silver Award: £2,000 for the second most improved Town/Parish Bronze Award: £1,000 for the third most improved Town/Parish

Town & Parish Council Recycle & Reward Scheme 2016 – 2017 cont. MKC, from the DCLG grant received will pay you a lump sum – based on the number of properties in your Parish: 35p for each property (minimum £100 for those with under 100 properties) 15p per property bonus payment for an increase in food and garden waste recycling over the 3 month reward period The payments are to reward the community for their efforts and can be spent on items such as bulbs, plants, benches, play area and/or sports equipment, litter or dog waste bins etc.. which will be maintained in the future by the Parish or Town Council. You can also hold a fair or street party to reward your residents!

Your Involvement In return for the initial lump sum payment, here are some suggestions of how you might support the initiative. This list of suggestions is not extensive or exclusive and we welcome your feedback and suggestions of how you can promote the initiative: Actively promote the campaign using all available channels and events e.g. Posters Parish events Parish Newsletters Parish Noticeboard etc. Periodically monitor green bin presentation during the initiative period if possible Engage with residents during the initiative period – door knocking, parish surgeries and events etc. Inform residents what you have used the reward scheme money to purchase for their area

Our Commitment In return to your involvement to the scheme we will: Provide you with the necessary resources to download and use to inform your residents including: template poster and leaflet, sample social media posts, and an Information Pack: Introductory Letter Pledge Certificate Posters FAQ sheet Town/Parish Council Feedback Form Dec 2016 – Feb 2017 As well as support and advice if needed.
