The Developing Foetus

The embryo is about 6mm long and has a heart, brain, spinal cord and arm and leg buds.

25mm long weighs 2g. Most of the main organs, arms and legs are forming. Now called a foetus.

75mm long weighs 18g. Main organs have fully developed. Nails are growing on the fingers and toes. Ears, eyelids and teeth have formed.

160mm long weighs 140g External genital organs can be seen. Covered in fine hair.

280mm long Eyes are open and foetus has a strong desire to suck.

370mm long Has a good chance of survival if born at this stage.

50cm long weighs between 2.7 - 4.1kg Head faces downwards and foetus is ready to be born.

TWINS When more than one baby grows in the womb at a time it is known as a multiple birth. When twins are born they can either look the same or not look alike at all. Meet Shane and Mark. They are identical twins. These twins look the same because the egg splits in half after fertilisation. They must be the same sex. Meet Sally and Peter. They are fraternal twins. These two do not look at all alike. In their case two eggs were released at the same time and each one was fertilised by a different sperm thus producing two different individuals. They could be different sexes like Sally and Peter.
