Mental health is the psychological, social and emotional well-being of a person. It affects a person’s ability to think, feel, and act. It helps determine how we make choices, relate to others, and handle everyday demands. Tifany Parts of mental health…?: For this year of Youth Commission, we are focusing on phone addiction, substance abuse, domestic violence, and suicide. Youth with mental health issues are most likely to be unhappy in their community and everyday life. Their life is negatively impacted and it becomes more difficult for someone to help them recover.

Suicide Domestic Violence Drugs & Substance Abuse Phone Addiction School: -Poor concentration, distractibility, inability to retain information, poor peer relationships, aggressive behaviour -More likely to be absent, suspended, or expelled -Miss avg. of 18-22 days, three times higher rates of suspension and expulsion -32% is students with a mental illness don’t continue to a post secondary education class -More likely to engage in high risk behaviours -Drug, alcohol, suicide attempts Family: -Challenges to parents and siblings -Blamed for family distress -Relationship becomes strained -Parents unsure of how to help -Parental relationship is challenged -Marital discord -Affect family’s relationship with relatives and friends -Isolate family from sources of support

Phone Addiction (Dane) Dane: Phone addiction refers to a person’s dependence on their cell phone or other electronic device and relative inability to think or act properly without it. Internet and smartphone addictions are relevant because they’ve been linked to both emotional and intellectual damage in teens as well as adults. In addition to that, the constant distractions that are caused by a person’s addiction to their phone have long-term consequences on the brain that can permanently affect the way a person thinks. The youth’s mental health is destroyed by substance abuse because of withdrawal symptoms and the effect of some drugs on the brain. Withdrawal symptoms can cause a sufferer of addiction to act erratic and do anything to make them feel normal again, which restricts the person from having a normal life focused on fun things, not “how am I going to get my drugs?”

Suicidal thoughts affect the individual’s ability to function or enjoy life. The decision to kill oneself extends far beyond his or her own shortened lifetime. Families and friends deal with guilt, anger, and depression as a result of the lost life
