Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (or Law of the Sea Convention, LOSC)

Name : Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 Draft Year : 1858 Amendment years : 1960, 1973 International

Function The Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 functions to govern the seas. It is a treaty that protects nations’ rights, pollution of the sea, protecting marine life, and deals with pirates. Part of the Convention on the Law of the Sea deals with protecting and preserving marine life, but most of the treaty deals with law concerning the sea. The Convention also address concerns with dumping sewage into the sea and the fishing rights that fishermen have.

Regulation Enforcement Enforcement for this treaty is complicated because many countries have rights over many parts of the sea. If a boat is flying a nation’s flag then they are required to enforce the regulations, and if the boat is sailing in another nation’s territory that nation is required to ask permission to enforce the regulations. Port nations and coastal nations are also allowed the right to enforce regulations.
