H&R BLOCK South Hampton Office Presented for: Dr. Bruce Hartman Dorothy Lirio-Casa Vince Largo Presented by: Valerie Potts Lila Schwarzbach Timothy Gerritsen Brett Lowers Fall Semester December 18th, 2009

Mission statement “Our mission is to increase H&R Block’s current clientele base 10% by expanding our current tax preparation services to accommodate college students in the Benicia and Vallejo areas. It is our goal to guide them with their tax and financial needs throughout college and into their future careers, by establishing long-term relationships that will last a lifetime. Once the “College Block Program” proves successful, we foresee a national implementation of the program within the next 5 years.”

Evolution of strategy H&R Block originally proposed we focus on the “Latino Blitz” Only 10% of individuals living in Benicia are Hispanic or Latino “Latino Blitz” would not be applicable to the South Hampton office due to low Latino demographics Bilingual brochures and tax professionals Other alternatives were explored

Alternate plans Expansion of the School House Program Best of Both College Block Program Best of Both Target Markets High school graduates College freshmen starting their collegiate career. Existing college students Professors

College block The “College Block Program” was inspired by the “School House Program” Potential commercial spin-off of the community service based “School House Program” Follow-up of established relationship with high school students, as well as completely new relationships with college students

College block The “College Block Program” offers: Flat fee of $40 per tax filing for college students Flat fee of $30 for students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher A maximum income level will be established Discounted tax filings are available for students who exceed the preset limit Discounted tax filings for professors

Dr Bruce Hartman 1 Morrow Cove Vallejo, CA 94590

college block goals Establish and maintain close relationships with at least 10% college students at participating colleges within the next 2 years See success in the program, and expand it nationally by 2015

Implementation Implemented in colleges in the area such as: The California Maritime Academy Diablo Valley College St. Mary’s College Laney College Touro University Contra Costa Community College UC Davis Solano Community College College campus visits Presentations to students and professors Distribute flyers and coupons at presentations and through email and snail mail

College Block Program Latino Blitz School House Program Best of Both

Plus minus interesting matrix Great new service +5 Not community based -3 Niche opportunity +3 Could help students across the nation + 3 Possibly a high investment in "cost cutting economic times" -4 We are in a decent position for a trial in Benicia district. +3 Offers teachers a break +2   How many students file a full tax-return? -3 Long-term relationship with students +3 Potential huge market +3 16 -7 3 Total: +12

Porter’s five forces model

Concluding thoughts In our opinion, based on our research, the “College Block Program” as a strategy has great potential across many different areas as discussed in our strategic proposal The plan was created based on the limited information provided, so it should be scalable for local and nationwide implementation
