Reading Questions: part 1 Chapter 1 Who does Irene receive a letter from? Who is Claire Kendry? Be sure to tell me what the text says in your response How does Irene describe Claire’s personality? What happens to Clare’s dad? Do you know anyone who could be described in a way similar to Claire? Why does Irene not want to see Clare? What do think Clare means by the “Pale Life?” What are the implications of this term? What inferences can we make about Clare’s ‘pale life’? Make your best predictions of what might have happened in Chicago.

Chapter 2 Questions 1. What is the setting of Chapter 2? DICTION: What words did the author intentionally use to describe this setting. 2. Where is Irene in the setting? 3. How does Irene react to the man fainting? What does this say about her character? 4. Using context clues: Look at the word Nebulous on page 12. What is the meaning of this word? 5. Why is Irene in the city? 6. How does Irene see while in the café? 7. What does this chapter reveal about Irene? What textual evidence is there? 8. What does Irene realize about the other person in this chapter?

What events inspired these rumors. 11. What were their assumptions of the “work” that she did? 12. What do we learn about Clare through her conversation with Irene? 13. When Irene invites Clare to meet with friends, why can’t she go? 14. What questions does Irene assume need to be asked while passing? 15. Look at the last paragraph on page 37, continued on to page 38. How does this statement connect with our discussions on colorism? (4-5 sentences) 16.
