3.4 Global Cultural/Intellectual Attributes The Development of Civilization | 2000-1000 BCE

Similarities and Differences

East Asia Great bronze-working skills, producing highly-refined work Evidence of a sophisticated specialized class of workers Shang-Zhou Dynasties Continued and improved upon Shang cultural traditions Probably suggest a connection to their predecessors Legitimizing succession The Mandate of Heaven Used to legitimize/justify rule

South and Southeast Asia The Vedas as stories and hymns about Indo-Aryan culture/life Told tales of their movement into India and the battles they fought with the indigenous Indians As the caste system developed, it came to define their culture Religion, society, and culture were one The household was seen as immensely important to Vedic culture Women were revered for their duties as women There was an emphasis on love between husband and wife Children were spoiled

The Near East The Code of Hammurabi would come to define a political culture in Mesopotamia The culture of iron-making allowed the Hittites to dominate Mesopotamia They would overthrow the Babylonians The Phoenicians were seafarers They would trade far and wide, settling in favorable lands Colonies

Africa Egyptian culture thrived and survived for nearly 3,000 years Its success began to catch up with it High priests became corrupt and power-hungry, they would work to undermine the Pharaoh Ramses II as the last great Pharaoh Defended the empire against foreign invasions The “Sea Peoples” The Hittites The culture of the people became complacent Would soon not object to a foreign ruler

Europe Minoans were a culture of sea traders Their trade exposed them to Egyptian culture, which they mimicked The Mycenaean’s were a culture of warriors They fought against each other as much as their enemies The Siege of Troy

The Americas The Olmec peoples were great famers and traders With a variety of goods to trade, early American cultures developed a keen sense of organization and structure They would also be great builders of complex temple complexes Developed a form of recreational football The Andean peoples and the mysterious Nazca Lines
