LT1: Atomic Structure NOTES

Democritus Contributions (460-370BC) Matter is not infinitely divisible Matter is made of “atomos” where the word atoms is derived from Atoms cannot be created, destroyed or divided Atoms move through empty space

Aristotle contributions (384-322 BC) Empty space doesn’t exist Matter is made of Earth, fire, water and air Earth, which is cold and dry; this corresponds to the modern idea of a solid. Water, which is cold and wet; this corresponds to the modern idea of a liquid. Air, which is hot and wet; this corresponds to the modern idea of a gas. Fire, which is hot and dry; this corresponds to the modern ideas of plasma and heat. Aether, which is the divine substance that makes up the heavenly spheres and heavenly bodies (stars and planets).

Dalton’s Atomic Theory (1766-1844) Check if it is true or X if it is untrue and explain why. All elements are composed of tiny indivisible particles called atoms. Atoms of the same element are identical but different than atoms of different elements. Atoms can be physically mixed or chemically combined to form compounds. Chemical reactions occur when atoms are separated, joined, or rearranged. Atoms of one element can’t change into atoms of another element.
