Technology Changes History Society and the Enviroment ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

The Big Idea People are better able to understand the world around them when they explore how people of all times and places have used their unique skills to innovate, improvise, and invent. ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Technological Systems Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics principles combine to form small systems. Small systems are combined to form larger systems. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are interrelated to the extent where progress in one area promotes advancement in all other areas. ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

TECHNOLOGY IS . . . Human innovation that involves the generation of knowledge and processes to develop systems that solve problems and extend human capabilities.

ENGINEERING Engineering involves the knowledge of mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experiences, and practices that are aligned with judgment and creativity to develop ways to utilize materials and forces of nature.

SCIENCE Science is the study of the natural world through observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation.

Impacts of Technology Weighing the trade-offs to determine if technology is feasible refers to impacts of technology. Can be positive or negative Intended or unintended Expected or unexpected The fact that we tolerate some technologies, even though they have negative impacts on us is a trade-off.

Types of Impacts From the Use of Technology Ethical considerations are important in the development, selection, and use of technology. Impacts may be positive or negative: Social Economic Cultural Political Environmental ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Impacts of Technology Technology Affects: Examples of How: Society Culture 1. Everything below and more. 1. American culture is a very informed culture due the availability of communication devices. 2. Americans have the freedom to travel due to the interstate highway system and cars being able to be manufactured inexpensively.

Impacts of Technology Economy Technology Affects: Examples of How: Economy 1. Development of better products makes the economy stronger.  2. Printing press and molds used to make currency. 3. The assembly line enables various products to be mass produced.

Impacts of Technology Technology Affects: Examples of How: Environmental 1. Cutting down the trees to build a parking lot hurts the environment.   2. Building codes and laws that protect the environment.

Impacts of Technology Politics Technology Affects: Examples of How: 1. Laws developed for trade.  2. Laws for medical practices and cloning.  3. Advancements in technology lead to better foreign policies, laws, and other policies.   4. Ability for everyone to know what is going on in our country through communication. For example, with the widespread use of television and the Internet, citizens are better informed on political issues and news. As a result, people are becoming more savvy voters and in an indirect way are taking more responsibility for participating in their own government.

Impacts of Technology Technology Affects: Examples of How: Ethical Considerations 1. Cloning, is it right or wrong? 2. What will happen once we know the DNA make-up of human beings? 3. The President of the United States placing a moratorium on human cloning
