IET 600 Impact of Technology Fall 2012 By: Shane Wallingford

Positive Impacts of Technology 1. Better health for people 2. Better communication 3. Better productivity 4. Better transportation

Better Health for People 1. Lower infant mortality rates 2. Longer life expectancy 3. Better disease control

Lower Infant Mortality Rate

Longer Life Expectancy

Better Disease Control (Measles Ex.)

Better Communication 1. Computer and the internet 2. Cell phone 3. Satellite

Better Productivity (1947-2010)

Better Transportation New York to Los Angles On Horse - 6 months By Train – 6 days In automobile before 1960 – 25 days In automobile today – 3 days In air on a plane – 4 hours

Negative Impacts of Technology 1. Pollution 2. To System Dependent 3. More Dangerous Weapons

Pollution 1. Water 2. Air 3. Noise

Water Pollution 1. 40% of America’s rivers are to polluted to fish or swim. 2. 46% of America’s lakes are too polluted to fish or swim. Approximately 1 trillion tons of nitrogen waste flows into the Gulf of Mexico in a year. An estimated 6 million people die from drinking polluted water in the world.

Air Pollution Vehicle exhaust contributes roughly 60% of all carbon monoxide emissions nationwide, and up to 95% in cities. Global Warming (if you believe the data) Acid Rain Respiratory problems in People

Noise Pollution Large Equipment (Bull Dozers, Pans, Etc.) Manufacturing Plants with mobile equipment and other Machinery Steam Lines and Blow-offs Jack Hammers and other pneumatic tools

To System Dependent The electrical grid for the nation is all tied up on same network. Glitches in the system can cause major problems with the following; 1. Traffic signals 2. Elevators 3. Home Appliances 4. Communications 5. Air Traffic Controllers

More Dangerous Warfare Need I say anything else about a more dangerous warfare that comes from Technology.

Conclusion of Impacts of Technology There are many good aspects to technology that help us live a more productive, healthier, long life. They include better medicine, communication, and ability to get wherever we want. But without the proper thoughts and careful planning, we can potentially due irreparable damage to ourselves and our planet for future generations.
