Railroads First GA railroad chartered in 1832 Created by businessmen in Athens who needed a better way to ship cotton to Augusta GA had the most miles of RxR tracks in the South

Atlanta Atlanta was the headquarters of the Western and Atlantic Railroads Atlanta’s original names= Terminus and Marthasville (after governor Lumpkin’s daughter) Atlanta became the 1st major American city NOT built along a navigable river!
