ה-Vysoke Tatry ("הרי הטטרה הגבוהים") הוא אחד האזורים המאתגרים לטיול The Vysoke Tatry (“High Tatras”) is one of the challenging areas for hiking. Like many others, I arrived there via the gateway city of Poprad, which is located at the foot of the mountains.

Its railway station is quite small in European scale, but something in the sight of the platforms and the coaches created an unexplained uncomfortable feeling. אמצעִי התחבורה העיקרי במקום הוא הרכבת. תחנת הרכבת של פופרד אינה גדולה בקנה מידה אירופאי, ולמרות נוף ההרים שמסביב, משהו ברציפים ובקרונות הממתינים יצר איזו תחושת אי נוחות בלתי מוסברת.

שוטטות קצרה לאורך הרציף ומבט חטוף לקיר שפכו פתאום אור חדש על המקום. A short stroll and a glimpse to the wall suddenly shed a new light on this place.

בעקבות המפגש עם הפן היהודי החלטתי לשנות את מסלול הטיול, ולהתחקות מעט אחרי מה שהותירה הקהילה היהודית של סלובקיה. Following the meeting with this Jewish side, I decided to alter my trip itinerary and explore a bit of the remains left by the Jewish community of Slovakia.

בית הכנסת בעל הסגנון הקוביסטי תוכנן ע"י אדריכל נוצרי ונבנה בשנות העשרים של המאה העשרים. The cubist style synagogue was designed by a Christian architect and was built during the twentieth century twenties.

בחזית בית הכנסת לוח זיכרון ליהודי קושיצה שנשלחו למחנות ההשמדה. כיום אגב, חייה בקושיצה קהילה קטנה של כמה מאות יהודים (יחד עם כמה ישראלים שבאים ללמוד שם וטרינריה...). A memorial plate on the front is dedicated to the Jews of Koshice who were deported to the concentration camps. Today, a small Jewish community still lives in Koshice (together with several Israeli students who attend veterinary school there…).

I continue to the town with the impossible name Spishske Podhradie, which is dominated by the impressive Spissky Hrad (Castle): אני ממשיך לעיירה בעלת השם הבלתי אפשרי סְפּישְסקה פּוֹדְרָדְיֶה, שפירושה המילולי הוא "ספיש שלמרגלות הטירה". תשאלו איזו טירה? אז הנה לכם:

Downtown, at the foot of the castle, stands the only sustained synagogue left in the Spish region. ובעיירה, למרגלות הטירה, שוכן בית הכנסת היחיד שנותר שלם בכל אזור ספיש.

The synagogue was built in the late 19th century, and rebuilt in 1906 after a fire. It stood neglected for many years (in the photo), until renovated in the mid nineties. בית הכנסת נבנה בסוף המאה ה-19, ולאחר שריפה נבנה מחדש ב-1906. שנים רבות עמד המבנה עזוב ומוזנח (בתמונה), עד אשר שופץ באמצע שנות התשעים.

בית הכנסת משמש היום כמוזיאון קטן, אבל היות שתיירים לא נוהרים אליו בהמוניהם התברר שהוא בדרך כלל נעול. כדי להיכנס פנימה הייתי צריך להזעיק נציגה מבית העירייה, ועד מהרה התברר שאין שום טעם לנסות לעשות זאת באנגלית. עם קצת פנטומימה גיליתי בסוף שהביטוי "סינָגוֹגָה קְלוּצֶ'ה" פותח דלתות, תרתי משמע... The synagogue serves as a small museum, but it turned out to be locked due to lack of visitors. I had to call a representative from the town hall for help… with no English speaker on sight, I had to find the words that will “open the doors” for me: “Synagoga Cluche”…

We now turn to Banska Bistrica, a town which served as a center for the partisans who fought the Nazis. The house seen in the picture was probably used by Jews at that time. נפנה עתה לבנסקה ביסטריצה, עיר ששימשה מרכז ללוחמים הפרטיזנים הסלובקים שלחמו בנאצים. הבית הנראה בתמונה, אגב, משמש כיום כבית משרדים, אך המגן דוד לא מותיר מקום לספק באשר לדייריו בעבר.

A vivid evidence to the activity of the partisans lies deep in the forests of the “Nizke Tatry” mountain range. A steep trail through the forest leads to a shelter used by the partisans. עדות מוחשית לפעילות של הפרטיזנים ניתן לראות ביערות העבותים שמכסים את רכס הרי ה-Nizke Tatry. מסלול הליכה המתפתל ביער מוביל לנקודות מחבוא ששימשו בזמנו את הלוחמים הפרטיזנים.

The sights immediately bring to life the descriptions told by holocaust survivors who took part in the struggle during the war. מראה מחסות העץ ב"אמצע שום מקום" ביער מחייה מיד בדמיון את העדויות של ניצולי שואה על שעות המאבק הקשות ביערות בזמן המלחמה.

צפונית לרכס ה-Nizke Tatry שוכנת העיירה ליפּטוֹבְסְקי מיקוּלָש, בה מתנוסס לתפארה המבנה הנראה בתמונה. The town of Liptovsky Mikulash is situated north of the Nizke Tatry range. Just behind the main town square you can find this impressive structure.

But take a look at the back of the building… אבל שימו לב מה מתנוסס באמצע הקיר האחורי...

בית הכנסת נבנה באמצע המאה ה-19 ושופץ חלקית לפני כעשר שנים. The synagogue was built in the mid 19th century, and was partially renovated about ten years ago.

נשוב עתה לקושיצה, לבית כנסת נוסף, שנמצא במתחם הקהילה היהודית. זוהי חזית בית הכנסת, שעומד נטוש ומוזנח, וניכר שפניני יופיו ממתינות לשיפוץ ולקהל מבקרים. We head back to Koshice to visit yet another synagogue which is located in the Jewish community complex. This is the facade of the beautiful synagogue, which stands neglected waiting for renovation and visitors.

העיטורים הצבעוניים המקשטים את פנים בית הכנסת שורדים אך בקושי את פגעי הזמן, כמו גם ארון הקודש המיוחד. The colorful murals inside the synagogue hall have barely survived, and so is the ark.

"אבן מקיר תזעק" – זוהי כותרת לוח הזיכרון הקבוע ליד הכניסה למבנה ונראה בשקופית הבאה, החותמת מצגת זו. A memorial plate is located near the synagogue entrance, and can be seen in the next slide, which concludes this presentation.
