Changes Year 5 Summer Term English Science Maths German Music Art/D.T. Writing Story writing – we will be looking in depth at the features of story writing such as characterisation, setting the scene and plot. Using the class book – ‘The Greenling’, we will be creating our own imaginative stories. Write poetry in response to nature and animals observed such as the pig and sheep on the community farm. The children will look at different styles of poetry such a Limerick and narrative. Newspaper writing – use topical issues such as change of land use in Cropredy for housing development. Spoken language – Discussion and question opportunities with author Abi Elphinstone – see separate letter about trip. KS2 performance of ‘Oliver’. Continued current affair debates each week. Reading – Read poems based on nature such as ‘A Bird, came down the Walk’ by Emily Dickinson. Discuss meanings of sentence structures and use of language. Read non-fiction books such as on animals encountered in ‘Sky Song’ by Abi Elphinstone. Compare how the animals are represented in both fiction and non-fiction books. Spellings – Continue spelling practise every morning using words misspelt in writing work and practise spellings for test. Spellings brought home will focus on spelling patterns – ant/ance/ancy and ent/ence/ency. We will also be looking at how a root word changes when a suffix is added such as refer – referring. Vocabulary, Grammar & Punctuation – Changes – how punctuation can affect a piece of writing. Focus on complex and compound sentences. Lots of reading back work and editing! Science We will be finishing the space topic by looking at changes in night and day and the seasons. The children will have a go at growing plants from seeds to learn about plant reproduction. Children will also learn about asexual reproduction and will be growing new plants from cuttings and bulbs. Life cycles in animals – the children will be learning how other animals reproduce such as chickens. We will keep a diary of the life cycle of painted lady butterflies in our classroom. Human body changes – the children will receive a talk from the school nurse on puberty – more information will be given out closer to the time. Maths Fractions Finish fractions by looking at factions word problems and multiplying fractions. Decimals and Percentages To read and write decimal numbers as fractions and vice versa – use nutritional contents on food packaging to translate into fractions and decimals. Use food to find percentages of amounts and quantities. Geometry We will be identifying right angles comparing different angles such as acute, obtuse and reflex. We will be using projectors to measure angles. We will be finding missing angles. To identify 3-D shapes from a 2-D representation and use vocabulary such as faces and vertices. We will be looking at reflections and rotations. Statistics and Measures Perimeter of land (on the farm). Convert answers to different metric measurements, i.e. cm into mm. Use different metric measurements when measuring weights of food and heights of plants. Volume and capacity – how many pints to fill containers associated with gardening – watering can, butt, bucket etc. Create tables associated with work on food such as nutritional content Plot growth of plants in various conditions onto line graphs. Interpret the information and draw a conclusion. Year 5 Summer Term Topic web on Changes German Engage in conversation about Food Learn traditional German nursery rhymes and stories Music Learn how to read simple musical notation. Play duets on the recorders. Compose own music based on the seasons. Listen to music from composers such as Vivaldi’s ‘Four seasons and discuss how the music changes to depict the different seasons. Learn songs associated with Summer Production – Oliver Art/D.T. Be an illustrator – use choice of medium to create artwork in response to the story ‘The Greenling’. Use different sketching techniques (i.e. stipple, linear, cross hatch) with pencils to record observations of nature. Devise and cook a healthy menu using locally sourced fruit and vegetables R.E./P.H.S.E. We will be exploring the work of the Holy Spirit in inspiring Christians in the past and today We will also be learning about Pentecost Geography Learn about what economic activity happens in Cropredy such as growing and selling local produce from the community farm. Use maps to locate where different food produce comes from. Plot landmarks on a map of Cropredy when going for a walk.
