The UAB library resources for the MSc in Bioinformatics for genomics and drug design by Tomàs Fabregat Research support librarian

The Library Service: A general overview First, let's take a look at the universities which comprise the cluster of academic libraries.

cooperation 15 years ago all public university libraries joined under the umbrella of a Consortium named CBUC (Catalan Academic Libraries Consortium). Since there then, we've set up different collaborative projects and products, such as an a union catalogue, named CCUC , a digital library, named BDC and a consortial borrowing service, named PUC. All of them have in common a continous permanent challenge to afford information costs, the sharing of share a core of information sources and the spreading spread of the scientific output. The CCUC is an union catalogue with more than 4 million titles that provides access to over 10 million items. The BDC the electronic information jointly licensed. The content in BDC is selected according to criteria of common interest to the members of the CBUC. Currently, it offers access to over 16.000 e-journals, 15.000 e-books and almost 50 reference databases from publishing companies. The content in BDC also includes some respositories such as TDX (Theses and Dissertations Online) and RECERCAT (Research Repository of Catalonia), open to everybody. In 2011 we set up a Consortial borrowing service in order to share the respective printed collections. The global aim of this Consortium is to offer all university users a core of interdisciplinary information, regardless of their place of work. Anyway, let's back home and let's take a look at our website.

Consortial borrowing service PUC (Yes, I can) Consortial borrowing service As I said PUC is the short name of Consortial borrowing service. The name is a pun, in Catalan it means “I can”. You can get books from any university library, from anywhere.

Library service website This is how what it looks like. Click any links below to go directly to some recomended links: Libraires directory / for Students / and for professors Use the above menu to go to the diferent sections. For instance, click on the resources link to learn more about the whole available licensed resources. In this page, on the right side you have all you need to get any document from any library, check for an electronic journals, manage your personal library account and also the off-campus access link. The library catalogue is for searching any documents printed or online. Don’t care about if you are looking for printed or online documents. The content in the catalog contains the reference to any publication we have, printed or licensed. Don’t care about The format doesn't matter. If printed, you’ll see the library holdings. If online, you’ll see the authorized link (not necessarily be the same as in other search engines). Let me to tell you an important tip about the catalog: you never should use it to search for journal contents as papers. When searching for papers you will need some different tools. I'll talk about that later in the second part. Let me to tell you an important tip about the catalogue: you never should should never use it to search for journal contents as papers. When searching for papers you will need some different tools. I'll talk about that later.   From here you can also access your personal account. Just click on “my account”, below the catalogue search box. Entering your account you can check for list and renew your, check the deadlines and activate your loan history, as well. As a master students, you can borrow up to 12 items during for four weeks. Let's go back to the cooperative services. www.uab.cat/biblioteques/ www.uab.cat/bibliotecas/ www.uab.cat/libraries/

Off-campus access Going to the home website, on the right side, you have the off-campus link.

Off-campus access Free service For paywall electronic resources UAB credentials are required Let’s Say you usually go to Scientific Programming journal.

Introducing you some reliable information sources on Bioinformatics Speaking about papers ...the scientific literature like articles and conference proceedings are the basic food for your research. Any good academic work should start by reporting or stating the general background on which your research is based. Do are you agree? (Proceeding: academic papers, like articles, published in the context of an academic conference, before it opened or after it closed. Usually a peer reviewed control is required.)   Before moving on to some selected sources, let's remember remind how publishers make their content available.

SECONDARY SOURCES PRIMARY SOURCES Reference or literature databases published and unpublished literature Full-text plattforms and OA repositories Peer reviewed Indexed by Keep in mind these two terms: primary sources or full text sources and secondary sources or reference databases (or literature databases).   Reliable full texts papers and conference proceedings are available provided that you institution had paid for them, through a licensed subscription. Therefore, publishers provide the universities with some kind of paywall platforms containing gathered /gàded/ contents, also known as full-text platforms. Given that the amount of published information (thousands of journals in any discipline) another other kind of tools are needed, named reference or literature databases. So, accessing papers trough a reference database could be a good way to start and keep updated with any research topic. That's why I always underline the difference between full-text and reference sources. I talked about reliable sources. Ideally, in the academic context it refers to the peer review procedure , as a quality control system. Do you know what is its? The content quality is typically ensured by having papers read by external people before been being accepted and published. After a blind revision, eventually the papers or proceedings are published. This blind procedure can take up to some months.

Information sources at your fingertips Published literature (ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, ACM, IEEE, etc.) Unpublished literature (OA repositories) Reference or bibliographic databases(WOK, SCOPUS, etc.) Search engines (CiteSeer, Google Scholar, etc.) Anyway, first lets take a look at the major full-text platforms and then at the major reference databases.

Full text primary sources   ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and IEEE ((Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) are the two leading learning societies which publish high-quality research and technical information in many CS disciplines. You can access almost all their journals and proceedings. Let's move to ACM Who pays for it Review process. Ex. : ACM Transactions on Automatic and Adaptative Systems Take a close look to proceedings lists As I said, the peer review is an important feature of the scientific publishing, as you can see. Let’s visit / let’s see it in reality Let’s have a look at it IEEExplore "What can you access" link Resource for discovery and access to IEEE content and its partners, like IET (Institute of Eng. And Technology) Ex: IEEE Transactions on Information Theory

Major reference databases

Minimun requirements: Bibliographic information Searching and filtering functionalities Downloading functionalities (BibTex) Must be linked to you library collection How to get a paper? Is it open access or paywall? Does your library have the original papers, online or printed?

Google Scholar + ARE

Example: high performance computing --> reviews --> analyse the results -->Spain --> analyse authors   (Do you know the difference between a paper and a review? If you want to know what's the state of art of a topic , take a general perspective , know who are the principal searches or what are the last basic milestones, you could search for a relevant and update review. Anyway, So, which one are the most accurate, comprehensive, etc. That lead us to some elementary questions you could wonder state: what, where, why, how?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?otool=bibuablib

Let’s recap Access to full text depends on the subscribed licenses Literature databases can help you finding reliable and suitable scientific information Make sure that your information source is linked to the library collection   -you can get the full paper provided that your institution pay for it -literature databases can help you to find reliable information -think about sources profiles before starting the search -LD should be linked to the library collection No more excuses to start with your academic work

So, how can I manage so much information?

About the DDD, your first step into the OA research repositories This part is about the last step of your work: save it in an OA repositories.

What’s Open Access Make your master thesis publicly available, free or charge and respecting the intellectual property . I talked about non published works which can’t be found in a LD. Therefore, where could you find other MSc thesis or other kind of academic works if they are not indexed by Scopus o WOK?. For these this kind of works go to OA repositories. Many universities have a digital archive of repository and harvest their own academic or research output. Right, let's take a look at our local repository where you can save your thesis and spread it over the world.

What’s DDD Example: Some academic works on bioinformatics DDD (triple D, Digital Documents Repository) is the name of UAB repository. The contents in It comprises many different kinds of documentation including master thesis.   Maybe you will eventually become a successful researcher and will publish in frontline journals. Take your time. Meanwhile, you have a free platform that offers you:

Advantatges of OA More visibility for authors and for institutions Favors the impact of research results Guarantees the preservation and conservation -visibility -favors the impact, your works is know and cited by others -save your work

And ... Stable and public platform for published and unpublished documents Permanent URL (handle system for digital objects) Standard metadata (interoperability) Full text search Customized stats

Spreading your work Recolecta Scholar Google Recercat Search engines large scale reositories Recolecta Google Scholar Recercat Once your final work is accepted it could be archived and spread all over the net through larger repositories like RECERCAT, for the academic output made in Catalonia, or DRIVER, the largest initiative of this kind. Ex cerca a Driver: portable software and high performance computing Ex cerca a DRIVER-->DDD-->RECERCAT (handle system): Parallelization of whole genome alignment.   But what about your copyrights? DDD (UAB’s repository)

About the intellectual rights OA repositories are based on Creative Commons licenses which allow people to access and read the content for free, in contrast to the paywall platforms. The recommend license allows others other people to download your work but they can't change it or use commercially. In any case, users have to credit you when uses using your work.

How to Give your permission to the UAB to preserve it and make it publicly accessible Before upload the thesis: Reviewed by your director/tutor Basic data: author identification, abstract, keywords Bring the thesis to the library in the required format (.pdf) -the most important: give us your permission authorise us / give us your consent (filling an application) and selecting select a CC license -have it been reviewed by your tutors? / Have it reviewed by your tutors -have check some basic data: authors id., abstract in different languages and keywords -bring grant it to the library in the required format (.pdf), or through ask your tutor to do so.

Keep in touch with your library @bctuab Right, before finishing off the presentation afternoon, let me to learn you remind you our blogs and our twitter name to keep in touch with the library I've also brought you some brochures and marketing gadgets. Feel free to take whichever you want Do we have time for questions? Any questions?   Have a nice …

Thank you! Tomas.fabregat@uab.cat
