Person Theory/Invention Impact on World Nicolaus Copernicus Heliocentric – sun was the center of the universe, planets revolve around the sun Questioned religious thinkers and previous ideas Galileo Galilei Created an astronomical telescope – helped prove Copernicus right that the earth rotates around the sun Challenged Christian thoughts and was correct, also proved Copernicus right Johannes Kepler Calculated the orbits of the planets around the sun Helped develop what we know today, helps us develop the calendar we use today Robert Boyle Chemistry – difference between elements & compounds and explained the effect of temperature on gases Periodic table, thermometers, boiling water, etc. Francis Bacon & Rene Descartes Developed scientific method - the truth can be found after making a hypothesis and investigating (scientific procedure/method) Still used today “I think, therefore I am.” Isaac Newton Law of gravity, law of motion and mechanics Helped develop new branch of math - calculus
