La Transmisión de Datos de Alta Capacidad en Redes de Educación Ferran Hernández Suriñach Director Regional de Desarrollo de Negocio

REN Worldwide And so we have created a world wide web of fiber connections. This map is a vastly simplified view of the subsea connections around the world. And over the land we find individual service providers creating terrestrial fiber routes that interconnect major towns and cities. Here’s the Level(3) network in North America. The Interoute network spanning Europe. And the Virgin Media within the UK. You’ll find similar fiber infrastructure in all of the countries of the world, sometimes stretching right out to individual homes.

Transmission Requirements in NREN High Capacity Big amounts of data to be transferred: CERN, Radio Telescopes, Virtual Reality, HD environments, Genomic Data, … You need the data right now! No matter how big the need is, you can not wait for months. Immediacy Geoff covers the Capacity and Reach topics, then hands over to Eric to talk about Operational Scalability. Research and Education are changing environments. Where will the next amount of data be? How big will it be? Flexibility

Scaling Capacity: How do we make the pipe bigger? Per-Wavelength Options Increase the Baud rate of the electronics It’s happening, but slower than we would like Higher order modulation – QPSK → 16QAM → 64QAM It works really well, but has a dramatic impact on LH reach – OK for metro or DCI Geoff Implement multiple, parallel wavelengths per linecard Coherent Super-Channels The preferred LH market option

What is a “super-channel”? The optical analogy of the multi-core CPU Unlike conventional transponder solution… Multiple coherent carriers Implemented on one appliance/card Seen as a single unit of capacity Brought in service in 1 operational cycle Using 1 fiber pair Enabling pre-deployed, SW defined capacity via Instant BW Super-Channel Single Fiber Geoff Super-Channel . Single Fiber Super-channels add operational scalability to coherent spectral efficiency and reach

New additional capacity in one click: Instant Bandwidth An Infinite Pool of Intelligent Bandwidth Provisioned in slices matching service needs 100G 100G 100G/200G slices available; software-defined activation 100G 100G 100G 100G 100G Terabit Era: 1.2Tb/s Pool Nx100G/200G (PIC-based Super-channel) Enabled Per Line Module/Appliance

GARR GARR Deploys Infinera for Multi-Terabit Research & Education Network in Italy “The innovative FlexCoherent Processor and PIC technology behind Infinera’s Intelligent Transport Network provide GARR the advanced capabilities needed to deliver critical services to the research and university community across Italy. The flexibility, speed of service delivery and rich network management system provided by the Infinera Intelligent Transport Network and Instant Bandwidth enable us to scale network bandwidth and accelerate service innovation to support large research and education development projects.” Massimo Carboni GARR CTO

Creating a World Record 26.02 Tb/s per hour Creating a World Record The World’s Fastest Optical Link Provisioning Rate World Record set in 2013 Still stands today!

Already enjoying Infinera benefits Super-Channel Guinness World Record Amsterdam Hamburg Amsterdam to Hamburg (real network link) 8Tb/s in 19min w/1 engineer Production equipment, production link Equivalent of entire internet in 2005 Proves lower OpEx and Time as a Weapon Only 1 company is shipping super-channels Conventional 100G 160 transponders, 160 fibers Infinera Super-Channels 32 Line Modules, 32 Fibers On August 13th, 2013 a team from Infinera and DANTE established an official Guinness World Record for the fastest provisioning of multi-terabit capacity on a long haul network. CLICK The link was part of the GEANT backbone, operated by DANTE, and it runs between Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Hamburg in Germany. We achieved 8Tb/s of super-channel capacity turned up in just over 19 minutes, and with only one engineer touching the equipment. Just to be clear. This was not a hero experiment. It used production equipment, over a real network link and amp chain. And the scale of the capacity is the equivalent to the entire global internet in 2005. A key point to this record attempt is that it is a clear proof point for Infinera’s Intelligent Transport Network architecture, and showcases our ability to drive down network OpEx and allow our customers to use Time as a Weapon. Here’s a simple summary of why that’s the case. In a conventional 100G, transponder-based deployment a service provider would need to deploy 160 transponders, and connect 160 fibers into the line system to achieve 8Tb/s of capacity. It could be done…but goodness knows how long it would take. Depending on the exact system used it might take a considerable amount of time to balance the power of the amplifiers along the link. But with the Infinera Super-Channel approach we only needed 32 line modules – 16 at each end of the link, and only 32 cables connecting those line modules to the line system. All the amplifier power balancing was performed automatically by protocols within the Infinera equipment. That kind of operational scalability is unique to the Infinera solution because we are the only company shipping super-channels today.

Summary HIGH CAPACITY Coherent optical superchannels transmission delivers terabit scale capacity IMMEDIACY Service-Ready Capacity through Instant Bandwidth for services delivered in minutes FLEXIBILITY Operational Scale and SDN Service provisioning and optimization

Gracias!
