Starting Point George Counts (1889-1974) In the 1930s Brameld was drawn to a social activist group of scholars at Teachers College, Columbia University (i.e. Counts, Rugg, Curti, and Kilpatrick). Counts especially influenced him profoundly. Writing in The Social Frontier, a journal of educational and political critique, he argued for a radical philosophy that focused analysis on weaknesses in the social, economic, and political structure. George Counts (1889-1974) From this analysis came constructive blueprints for a new social order that challenged social inequities like prejudice, discrimination, and economic exploitation. http://udmathteaching.wordpress.com

Notable Reconstructivisits George Counts (1889-1974) - recognized that Education was the means of preparing people for creating this new social order. Paulo Freire (1921-1997) - a Brazilian whose experiences living in poverty led him to champion education and literacy as the vehicle for social change. - humans must learn to resist oppression and not become its victims, nor oppress others. - saw teaching and learning as a process of inquiry in which the child must invent and reinvent the world. http://udmathteaching.wordpress.com
