Section 2: Physical Training 2.1 Components of fitness

Starter Activity 1- Using the cards provided on your desk match the correct definition with the key term.

Outcomes: Aspire: Be able identify the most appropriate component for certain sports and explain the relevance of such components. Challenge: Be able to recall most of the components of fitness

Activity 1: Each student assigned a number from 1 – 10. Student number 1 is CV endurance, number 2 is muscular strength and so on. Students write component of fitness on front of whiteboard and then the definition on the back.

Components & Sports Which component would be the most important for each of the following sports? 100m sprinter? Long distance runner? Long Jump? Forward in rugby? Goalkeeper in football? Weight lifter? Gymnast? Each sport will have a component which is naturally more important than others although a case could be argued which single component is the most important. 1. The ability to continuously exercise without tiring. 4. The ability of a muscle to exert force for a short period of time. 8. The ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeatedly contract or keep going without rest. 2. The range of movement that you can have around a joint. 5. A combination of strength and speed. 9. The ability of repeating a pattern or sequence of movements with fluency and accuracy. 3. The ability to keep your body mass or centre of mass over a base of support. 6. How quickly you can change direction under control and maintain speed, balance and power. 10. The time taken to initiate an action or movement. 7. The maximum rate that a person can move over a specific distance or speed of specific body parts.

Traffic Light it Where is your learning at? Red = I have misunderstood some of the topics. (write down 2 questions that you need help with) Amber = I have understood most of the topics so far (write down 1 question and 1 key theme you have understood) Green = I have understood the topics so far (write down 2 key themes from the lesson to show your understanding)
