Curriculum Overview and Highlights -Structure and Function -Mostly Biology -Frog Dissection -Genes and Molecular Machines -Mostly Genetics -Strawberry DNA Extraction -Ecosystems and Their Interactions -Mostly Ecology -Field Trip to Woodland Park Zoo

Keeping Tabs on my Student and Checking Grades -To see what we are doing in class, you can visit our Life Science Class Website. -The “Daily Objective Slides” show what we are doing on a daily basis. -Due dates are on the home page. -You can check your student’s grade via Student Access /Family Access/Skyward

Missing School and Making Up Work -Daily Objective Slides with Assignments and Due Dates -A Copy of Every Worksheet the Students Receive -A Calendar with a List of all of the Due Dates -Website is Updated Daily -Late Work is Worth at Least 80% -For Absent Work the Students Receive a One Day Extension for Everyday Missed Current Due Dates Online Textbooks

Class Workload “80% Rule” -We will have 1-3 assignments per week. -The students will have a fair amount of time to work in class with other students. -What is not finished in class will need to be completed outside of class (“homework”). -There will be no work that is exclusively assigned to be completed at home. (No Homework) “80% Rule” -Students’ receive enough time in class for about 80% of the students to finish about 80”% of their work. -Fast and focused students might finish all of their work in class. -Students that take a bit more time or are more social, might have more work to finish outside of class.

Redoing Work for More Credit and Quiz “Retakes” -Work may be redone for at least 80% credit. -If a student receives less than an 80% on a quiz they may print out and fill out and return a “Correct and Return” Form to receive up to an 80%. -The “Correct and Return” Forms can be found on the Life Science Class Website.

Assignments and Grades -Grade categories include organizational points, assignments, labs and assessments (quizzes). -At least one assignment per week is carefully examined and graded for accuracy (usually worth 10 points). -Other assignments are often graded as a “Two Point Turn In” completion grade (2 points). -An asterisk (*) in the grade book means the assignment is turned in, but not graded yet. -A zero (0) in the grade book means the assignment is missing. -Extra credit is available and options can be found on our Life Science Class Website. -Missing assignments will bring down a grade more than anything else.

About Mr. Abraham Strengths: -Year 19 at PLMS -Provides Students with Solid Lessons -Gets Students Excited About Science and Connects Science with the Real World. Weaknesses: -Does Not Grade Work Quickly -Gets Frustrated if Students Disrupt the Flow of the Lessons -Year 19 at PLMS -Taught -Life Science -Earth & Space Science -Physical Science -Outdoor Education -Technology -PE -Advisor -YMCA Earth Service Corps (Environmental Club) -Coached -Wrestling -Cross Country -Outside the Classroom: Family Man Two Boys (13 and 11) Outdoorsy Mountain Biker

This tends to help the most disorganized students. Required Materials This tends to help the most disorganized students. -Science Binder (I strongly recommend the students keep a separate binder for Life Science) -A Way to Keep Track of Due Dates (Planner or Science Calendar) -Something to Write With Optional: -Colored Pencils -A Red Writing Utensil -A USB Drive

Extracurricular Activities -Many 6th graders are looking to meet new people. If they participate in after-school activities they will meet new people with similar interests as their own. Middle school is a great time to try new things. -If a student has a new idea for a club they only need to find an adult advisor to facilitate the club. -There are activity buses that will take students close to home after the extracurricular activities. Sports: -Volleyball -Cross Country -Softball -Wrestling -Basketball -Girls Soccer -Track Clubs: -Math Club -Robotics Club -Green Team -YESC (Environmental Club) -Theatre Arts Club Homework Help: -Homework Club Library After School Hours
