SKIN

Integumentary System Parts Skin Follicles Oil Glands and Sweat Glands Hair Nails

SKIN largest organ in the body 12-15% of body weight surface area of 1-2 meters Melanin – pigment or color cells that gives color to skin and protects from sun

Layers of the Skin Epidermis – outermost, thinnest layer (what we see). Outermost cells of the epidermis are dead Dermis – layer right below the epidermis that contains blood vessels, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, nerves, and muscles Fatty Layer – insulates the body (also called Subcutaneous layer)

FIVE Functions of Skin 1. Protection – protective covering 2. Sensory Response 3. Formation of Vitamin D – helps absorb calcium 4. Regulates body temperature 5. Rids your body of waste (sweat – water and salt)

Skin functions in homeostasis (maintaining body balance) Protection (barrier) - selectively permeable – acts similar to cell membrane Regulation of body temperature - sweat glands (perspiration) Sensory reception – pain, pressure (touch) and temperature Prevents excess water loss
