Supporting the Data Management Needs of your Researchers 2017 Workshop for Heads and Chairs of Earth and Space Sciences Departments 10 December, 2017 Shelley Stall AGU Director, Data Programs orcid.org/0000-0003-2926-8353 sstall@agu.org @ShelleyStall

Data Challenges Curating / documenting research data Evolving data management mandates from funders Limited credit for new dataset contributions Curating / documenting research data Enabling research data discovery Publisher data sharing requirements Researcher Gap in Data Management Skills Researcher Point of View Difficulty with volume, the difficulty of locating adequate repositories, …and more

AGU’s position statement on data affirms that “Earth and space sciences data are a world heritage. Properly documented, credited, and preserved, they will help future scientists understand the Earth, planetary, and heliophysics systems.” Photo by Rick Meyers on Unsplash, Smith County I-40 Rest Area, Lancaster, United States Statement adopted by the American Geophysical Union 29 May 1997; Reaffirmed May 2001, May 2005, May 2006; Revised and Reaffirmed May 2009, February 2012 and September 2015. https://sciencepolicy.agu.org/files/2013/07/AGU-Data-Position-Statement-Final-2015.pdf Photo Credit: Photo by Rick Meyers on Unsplash

Research Data Ecosystem – Role View Other Roles: Research Labs Service providers to the ecosystem (e.g. PID providers, github, CrossRef, FundRef) Research offices -- not at institutions (e.g. Ronin) ESIP – Research as Art – where can that e better connection.s Each oval represents a critical role within the data ecosystem. The sub-bullets provide a general description as to the nature of the role. The processes that are shared between the roles are influenced by the items in the list on the right. Additionally, the shared processes can be informed and guided by the collaborations listed.

Data Management Processes that Support the Data Lifecycle

Researcher Challenges with Data Use The top four issues accounted for 73% of respondents 20.1% 17.1% 19.5% DataOne has training in these areas. 16.5% Data Management Skills Gap Analysis, April 7, 2017 http://bfe-inf.org/document/skills-gap-analysis

Göttingen-CODATA RDM Symposium 2018 Call for Papers, deadline 22 December 2017 The symposium is on 'the critical role of university RDM infrastructure in transforming data to knowledge', Göttingen, Germany, 18-20 March 2018 http://conference.codata.org/conference/2018_Goettingen_RDM

Research Data Services - Challenge Complete institution service portfolio covering the entire research lifecycle: support in writing proposals and data management plans, repository infrastructures for the storage of data, support in publishing data, assignment of persistent identifiers, Lecturing/training in data management, etc. This broad scope means that it is a joint effort from university, library, IT Center, faculties and other stakeholders. Nowhere in the world has such a complete support scenario been perfected. It is timely for actors in the various dimensions of such initiatives internationally to share their practical experiences, research and insights. Credit: Göttingen-CODATA RDM Symposium 2018

Upcoming Webinar: Research Data Services – Evolving Best Practices Mid to Late February 2018 – On a Friday Part of the AGU/AGI Heads and Chairs Webinar Series
