LQ: Can I analyse structure, form, language, themes and contexts in Othello? Setting and structure Shakespeare’s lifetime also coincided with what is sometimes referred to as the ‘Age of Discovery’. During the late sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, English merchant explorers travelled across the world, laying the foundations of the sugar and slave trades. Contact with a far wider range of people and cultures also affected English culture, and in Othello there are references to some of the fascination and fears aroused by conquest and discovery on this new, wider scale. Shakespeare reflected these areas of change and debate in his work. In Othello, Venice can be seen to represent order and civilization. The Venetian Senate administers a system of social order and justice, built on ideals of rationality and democracy. But this social order is under threat from the forces of disorder, represented by the Turks, Iago with his cynical philosophy of self-interest, and by the dark and dangerous side of Nature itself. InCyprus, the main characters are exposed to these dark forces, which surround and threaten them. Under their influence, Othello’s own character becomes disordered, with tragic consequences. Setting and structure cont… Structure and setting The social hierarchy of Venice is removed once the characters arrive in Cyprus which means that the characters are weakened somewhat. Once in Cyprus and without the social constraints in place and with the natural order displaced, the characters are fully exposed to Iago’s Machiavellian ways and it is only here, that the true nature of Iago’s character is revealed One way of looking at the structure of Othello is to see it in two parts: the first act, set in Venice, and the rest of the play, which takes place in a seaport in Cyprus. Venice represents the ‘civilised’ values of order, justice and democracy. A hierarchical system of leadership is securely in place, with the Duke standing in judgement and making sound decisions. Cyprus, on the other hand, represents the dangers of disorder. There, the characters are surrounded by hostile seas and the threat of the Turks. Othello’s victory and marriage celebrations turn to anarchy and riot. In Act 3, Scene 3, a very long scene that is central to the play’s structure, we see Othello himself besieged by the forces of disorder in the shape of Iago. Othello’s personality becomes fatally distorted, governed by irrational passion and vulnerable to Iago’s brilliantly organised deceptions.
