The Brain Learning How We Learn

Discuss the guidelines for writing in your journal.

List three important things about the brain.

Remind your partner what your daily schedule looks like.

Why is your cortex wrinkly? 2 Sheets of paper Leave one piece of paper flat. Crumple the other and open it up, but don’t flatten it. Lay it on top of the other piece of paper.

*What do you notice about the differences in the 2 pieces of paper? The wrinkles and bumps on the paper make it take up less space. It’s the same with your cortex. The wrinkles allow a larger area to fit in the limited space between your ears.

Parts of the Brain Cerebellum The cerebellum controls movement.

Parts of the Brain

Neurons Your brain sends messages through neurons. There are 100 billion neurons in the brain!

{ Neurons Dendrites Axon Axons – SEND messages Dendrites – GET messages

Neurons never touch. The message jumps from one dendrite to another axon.

The Principle of 10-24-7 7 days later To move information from short term memory  long term memory: “Use it or lose it” Review: 10 minutes later 24 hours later 7 days later

Beta Waves: divided focus, multi-tasking Brain Waves Beta Waves: divided focus, multi-tasking Alpha Waves: relaxed, alert, focused Theta Waves: right before you go to sleep, right before you wake up Delta Waves: deep sleep Awake Asleep

Thinking Caps 1. Color your brain using colored pencil. 2. Cut around the outside edges. 3. Cut the solid lines (that the arrows are pointing to) 4. Tuck the arrow flaps under until the dashed line meets the solid line 5. Glue or tape the pieces together.
