Open Educational Resources: New and Expanding Needs Tessa Handa bepress Consulting Services

Introduction What are Open Educational Resources (OER), and how can they serve your institution’s needs? Engaging faculty in conversations about Open Educational Resources Open Educational Resources in the institutional repository: multimedia teaching tools, textbooks, and more

Open Educational Resources are... “teaching, learning, and research resources released under an open license that permits their free use and repurposing by others.” SPARC Open Education Factsheet Sources: https://sparcopen.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/SPARC-Open-Education-Fact-Sheet.pdf

Value and Benefits of OER How can OER serve your institution’s needs? Value and Benefits of OER

Rising Cost of Textbooks Sources: https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2016/college-tuition-and-fees-increase-63-percent-since-january-2006.htm https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED529499.pdf https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1142913.pdf http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/2754/4442

OER Cost Savings University of Massachusetts Amherst 2011-2015 Institution Years Student Cost Savings University of Massachusetts Amherst 2011-2015 over $1,000,000 Portland State University Spring 2015-Fall 2017 $150,000 George Fox University Fall 2016-Spring 2017 $118,855 Sources: http://works.bepress.com/marilyn_billings/69/, https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/ulib_fac/251/,  http://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/libraries_fac/21/ http://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/libraries_fac/25/

Recognizing OER for Campus Needs Diverse campus groups are connecting open education initiatives to strategic goals. Grant-making organizations are funding OER materials or degrees. Over half of the states have a policy/initiative for OER; In 2018 Congress funded a $5 million open textbook grant program. More research studies on efficacy and perception of OER. Broadening Your Institutional Appeal The library is a natural partner for OER publishing. OER in the repository are permanently associated with your institution, giving demonstrated value from your community’s teaching. OER can be a recruitment tool for prospective students.

Addressing Barriers to OER Adoption Institution name prominently displayed alongside OER. Development and vetting process visible with materials. Demonstrate use of materials at other institutions.

How can I engage faculty in conversations about OER? Engaging Faculty

Faculty Awareness of OER 2017 Babson report found that many faculty are still not aware of several aspects of OER, but awareness is steadily increasing each year.  Source: http://www.onlinelearningsurvey.com/oer.html

Library Support for OER Part of your library’s suite of services. The library can help with education, licensing, print on demand, etc. Making resources already in the Learning Management System truly open.

Benefits of OER for Faculty More recognition for their teaching work. OER better meets the changing needs of teaching practices.

Bringing Faculty Aboard Start small, with existing materials such as slides. Remind faculty: You have already created content that can be used as OER. Work up to bigger fish: lectures, textbooks, worksheets, handouts, specimens.
