Errors with Continuous data Saturday, 10 November 2018

Example A piece of string is measured by Amy as 8cm correct to the nearest centimetre What is the smallest possible length of this string? What is the largest possible length of this string? The same piece of string is measured by Bilal as 7.9 cm correct to two significant figures. (c) What is the smallest possible length of this string? (d) What is the largest possible length of this string?

Example Looking at the average heights of women throughout the world. Indonesia has reportedly one of the lowest averages at 150 cm correct to the nearest 10 cm. Whilst the Netherlands has one of the highest average heights at 170 cm correct to the nearest 5 cm. Write down the Upper and Lower bounds for the average heights of women in these two countries.

Example John Measures the diameter of this circle as 6.3cm correct to one decimal place. Write down the limits between which the true diameter lies.

Example The ideal body weight for a man of height 180cm is 75 kg correct to 5 kg. Write down the lowest and greatest weights for this data.
