Welcome to the New Mexico State Personnel Office (SPO) Day 5 Your first week: Days 1-5
Day 5 Welcome to SPO! There are a number of things that will happen this week as you become a part of our team. Everyone at SPO wants to help make sure that your first days are smooth and seamless as possible as you begin your new job at SPO.
What you have already accomplished You had your orientation, you signed your forms, walked around and were introduced to everyone at SPO, you learned how to work your phone, our policies and procedures, how to write a req. and leave slip, lunch and breaks, how we are organized as an agency, FEMA trained, registered for defensive driving, able to navigate the SPO website, have insurance, and know how to get to your timesheet. You are doing great! Let’s start with some of the things you should do today (don’t forget you can pause this presentation at any time while viewing):

The Evaluation Process As a new hire you will have a four part evaluation this year. Initial 1st Interim 2nd Interim Final This is a quick walkthrough of the process.
Initial You will sit down with your evaluator (typically within the first two weeks of starting your job) and go over your PARF and set your goals for the year. The PARF (Position Action Request Form) will have your job duties listed. These are job specific and function as the baseline for evaluation. You and your manager will then set at least two goals for you for the year. These will be a significant part of your final evaluation.
1st Interim About three to four months into your work year, you will meet with your manager/supervisor to check your progress with your PARF and your goals and through your Performance Appraisal Self- Assessment Form (do not worry, this is explained in the next slide.) The 1st Interim is used to help each employee know exactly how they will be evaluated during the year and encourage professional growth and development.
Performance Appraisal Self-Evaluation Form As a part of your 1st Interim, 2nd Interim and Final Evaluation you will be invited to complete a self- assessment. This is a great way for you to document your progress during the year and be able to have a richer discussion during each part of the evaluation cycle. Many employees keep a paper copy in their desk and take notes on during the week and type up those notes for each evaluation period.
How to Access the Self-Evaluation Go to the NMSPO website: Click on “Resources”: Click on “Performance Evaluation”: Click on “Employee Self Assessment”:
2nd Interim Three to four months after your 1st Interim you will meet with your manager/supervisor for your 2nd Interim. You and your manager/supervisor will take an in— depth look at your progress during the year and assess how you can continue to add to your professional resume as a process of the cycle of continuous improvement at the SPO.
Final Evaluation About a month before your anniversary date your supervisor will send you an email with your upcoming Final Evaluation schedule. It will include: The date and time of your evaluation Your Performance Appraisal Self-Assessment Form.
The Final Discussion and Rating You and supervisor will go over your final evaluation using the 1st and 2nd Interims and your self-evaluation to see if you met all the PARF expectations for your job and if you were able to meet the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Your manager/supervisor will then give the EE to the reviewer (their boss) who will make any necessary changes, approve it and return it to your manager/supervisor to sign and give to you.
The Rating “Achieves Performance Standards” is a great rating. It means that you did every aspect of your job as indicated on the PARF, met all of your goals you set and that you have become a valuable member of the SPO team. Any rating above “Achieves” indicates that you have gone beyond your job description and have taken on other tasks and projects outside of your PARF and goals. Remember, an “Achieves” means you are doing your job and doing it well!
A Recap Learning to understand Civil Rights legislation, the cultures of our state and the evaluation process for your job is critical. Hopefully learning them went smoothly. You have signed up for and are familiar with: The Civil Rights training The Cultural Competency training Your Evaluation Process
There is so much more… …but it is your fifth day and you should be on solid ground. We hope that this information has helped you during your first week. Just remember that everyone on the SPO team is dedicated to helping you become an invaluable part of our agency. So ask questions if you have any. Welcome to the team!
