Waves.
What is a Wave? Sound and Light are forms of energy that travel in waves A wave is a repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter.
UNIT 3. What is a Wave? Definition: A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. What carries waves? A medium, a medium is the material through.

Wave Parts WAVES

1. What is a wave? A Wave is a disturbance that transfers ENERGY from place to place.

2. What is a medium? A substance through which a wave can travel Example of mediums: gas – Air liquid – Water solid – rope

3. What are the 2 categories of waves? Mechanical – waves that need a medium to transfer energy Example: sound wave must have a medium – sound does not travel through space Electromagnetic – do not need a medium to transfer energy Examples: visible light, radio waves, microwaves CAN travel through space 3. What are the 2 categories of waves?

4. What is a transverse wave? Waves that move at right angles to the direction of the wave. PERPENDICULAR – at right angles Up and Down 4. What is a transverse wave?

Transverse wave

5. What is a longitudinal wave? Particles move in the same direction that the wave is traveling. PARALLEL – same direction

Longitudinal wave

the distance the medium carrying the wave moves away from the rest position. Height of the wave from the rest position. 6. What is an amplitude?

7. What is wavelength? Distance between two corresponding wave parts. Distance from crest to crest, trough to trough, etc.

8. What is the frequency? Number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time. Frequency is measured in Hertz. As the frequency increases, the wavelength decreases and vice versa.
