What does the Middle East look like? 20 countries make up the area known as North Africa and the Middle East. North Africa and the Middle East are at least 3/4 desert and semiarid lands. Mountains are found in North Africa, Turkey, and Northern Iraq and Iran. This area has the world’s largest desert as well as the world’s longest river.

NILE RIVER : The longest river in the world - it flows for some 4,145 miles and empties into the Mediterranean---the last 500 miles being the heartland of Egypt.

SAHARA DESERT– world’s largest desert, most locations receive less than 10 in. of rain per year.

RESOURCES RENEWABLE RESOURCES Water Rivers serve as lifelines throughout the region. Water is the most important resource besides oil. Exotic rivers - rivers that are found where they are least expected - in desert areas usually flow through an oasis. NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES 1. OIL 2. NATURAL GAS

DIVERSITY Most of the people of the region are Arabs ( cultures are marked by Arab influences.) 90% of the people in the region are MUSLIMS they believe in the ISLAMIC FAITH, but there are different religious sects I.E.: Sunnites and the Shiites and regional differences that divide Arabs. Arabs also speak many different dialects, or language variations, or Arabic. Other important groups, include Jews, Turks and Persians (or Iranians). These groups represent a majority of the people in some countries of the region.
