Historical Background The rise of the Nazi came soon after the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Resulted because of the inability of the Weimar government to control society then. No big deal because “social” parties were very common in Germany. Founded in 1919 as the German Workers’ Party, The group promoted German pride and anti-Semitism, and expressed dissatisfaction with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, (peace document signed at the end of World War I by the Allied and associated powers and by Germany in the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, France, on June 28, 1919; it took force on January 10, 1920.) the 1919 peace settlement that ended World War I (1914-1918) and required Germany to make numerous concessions and reparations.

Historical Detail Propaganda - information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation The German Army was worried that it was a left-wing revolutionary group and sent Adolf Hitler, one of its education officers, to spy on the organization. Hitler discovered that the party's political ideas were similar to his own - he approved of Drexler's German nationalism and semitism. Anton Drexler saw the beliefs were very similar and could not help but to invite Hitler to join this organization. His role in German Workers’ Party escalated quickly. They saw his linguistic skills and later assigned him the role of the party’s propaganda manager.

Historical Detail Changing the Party’s Name: Many suggested that the new name should be Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP). Of course, Hitler disagreed with the suggestion. Hitler stood up for his beliefs, gaining the respect and obedience of other members of the group. Socialist ideas usually stood up for equality among gender and races, and that was not at all what Hitler wanted. Though he had a strong opinion on the subject, Hitler only believed in equality for those with “German blood” . Therefore, Jews and anyone who did not think like him were “aliens.”

Focusing the Attention on the NGWP 25 POINTS - First programme was published encouraging the German people to come together and fight for what they deserved. The main point was to not follow the agreement the German government signed in the treaty. 1921- Hitler challenges Drexlex to the leadership role, and won. He then began to spread hate and violence among his supporters. (3 months)

The Return of Hitler After being released, he formed his own army called the Sturm Abteilung (Storm Section). They focused on attacking their opponents, and organizing rallies. The members of his army were typically lots of those who fought in WW1. To remain clear: Violence was directed toward socialists and communists. There was an instance where Hitler suggested overthrowing the government members and execute them.

The Beer Hall Putsch A meeting of over 3,000 government officials. At the meeting, Hitler fired two shots and declared the Munich Putsch the National Revolution had began. He failed at this attempt. After the failed attempt, he told empowered government officials he had what it took to be Germany’s new leader. He convinced them to work with him and even offered them higher positions once he obtained leadership. Planned march in Berlin to remove the national government, this got Hitler arrested.

Hitler after Serving his Sentence 5 years in jail Published a book, “My Struggle”

With a divided Reichstag, the power of the German President became more important. In 1931 Hitler challenged Paul von Hindenburg for the presidency. Hindenburg was now 84 years old and showing signs of senility. However, a large percentage of the German population still feared Hitler and in the election Hindenburg had a comfortable majority.
