Essential Question: What is the composition of rocks and how are they formed? Standards: S6E5b. Investigate the contribution of minerals to rock composition. S6E5c. Classify rocks by their process of formation. S6E5d. Describe processes that change rocks and the surface of the earth.
Sedimentary Rock
Sedimentary Rock forms by the ongoing buildup (deposition) of rocks and other sediments that become compacted (packed) and cemented (joined).
Sediment is loose particles of clay, sand, gravel, shells, plant pieces, etc.
Sediments may be transported and deposited by moving wind, water, or ice.

Most fossils are located in sedimentary rock Most fossils are located in sedimentary rock. Based on what you have learned so far about the three types of rock, turn to an elbow partner and discuss why.
Unlike most igneous and metamorphic rocks, sedimentary rocks form at temperatures and pressures that do not destroy fossil remains.
Types of Rock Sorting Activity
Location of Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary Rock – Label your diagram
Igneous Rock forms from cooled lava or magma Why? Igneous Rock forms from cooled lava or magma
Sedimentary rock forms from sediments laid down by water or wind Why? Sedimentary rock forms from sediments laid down by water or wind
Metamorphic Rock Why? Metamorphic rocks are formed when rocks are changed by heat and/or pressure
