Elective Objectives Demonstrate strong work ethic and team work Always say yes! Network! Meet residents, staff and even other medical students Need at least 3 strong reference letters for apps Bring up desire for letter early; indicate you are looking for a strong letter of support Try to meet w/ residency PD of interest After – follow up and get feedback!

How Long? UCD requires a total of 6 weeks of electives 2x 3-week electives OR 1x 6-week 9-10 weeks off during summer Most US electives are 4 weeks Fill rest of time w as many 2 week electives as you can/want Consider January 2018 electives (2 or 4 weeks)

Elective To Do’s Scan/copy and upload (primarily for Canada – AFMC): Recent photo Police record check w vulnerable sector check (Manitoba) CV/Resume Proof of health insurance Passport Request from UCD Health Sciences Office (healthscience@ucd.ie) a Letter of Good Standing w/ statement of English proficiency Immunization Records and Serology Results Two-step TB test – get it now! (within 1 yr of elective) Hep C and HIV serology (within 1 year; req’d by Queen’s) Upload any and all documentation (from home & UCD)

Immunizations Some programs require exact titre numbers Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hep B Tropical Medical Bureau $$$ but easy UCD GP Annoying to schedule Get flu shot when offered at MMUH/SVUH
