Principles of Guided Pathways Guided Pathways offers students a clear set of course taking patterns that promotes better enrollment decisions, prepares students for future success and integrates support services in ways that make it easier for student to obtain the help they need over the course of their community college experience.

Four Pillars of Guided Pathways Clear curricular pathways to employment and further education Help students choose and enter their pathway Help students stay on their path Ensure that learning is happening with intentional outcomes

Key Elements of Guided Pathways Structured onboarding processes Improved placement tests and co-requisite instruction providing students with clear, actionable and usable info Instructional support and co-curricular activities Aligned with classroom learning and career interests Responsive student tracking system Aligned with interventions and resources to help students persist

Key Elements of Guided Pathways Proactive academic and career advising From start to completion with an assigned point of contact Programs that are fully mapped out and aligned With further education and career advancement and guided exploration and structure for undecided students Resigning and integrating basic skills/developmental education classes To accelerate students to college-level classes

Bringing in Student Voices I. Many students find choosing a major to be challenging Lack of clarity about their career goals Inability to identify their strengths and interests Unfamiliarity with career exploration and opportunities on campus Not knowing how different majors connect to careers

Student Quote “At least for me, it was a lot of not knowing where to go. Like communications. Okay, where do you go from there? Do I become a professor? Do I work in TV? What kinds of jobs do people have? It sounds corny, but are they happy in those jobs?”

Bringing in Student Voices II. Choosing courses and getting into the right ones is often challenging. The courses they needed were often full Frustration with waitlist process that failed to prioritize students who needed the course most Limited time slots (work and school conflicts) Taking courses that they did not need Had to speak with several counselors to get the right information

Student Quote “I think also if there was a [clearer]path for people who had decided on their majors, there wouldn’t be such an overflow in classes…If there’s a clear- cut path for what classes you should be taking, then [the college will] understand the ratio of student taking classes…”

Bringing in Student Voices III. Students value support services when they can access them, but many are unaware of the wide range of supports available. Many students found these services valuable: learning centers, transfer centers, tutoring centers, and learning communities, as well as financial support, scholarships free tuition, and transportation. Could do a better job of referring them to and raising awareness services as it took a long time to discover valuable services

Student Quotes “I found out about a lot of resources after the third or fourth semester, and I’m like, ‘Wow. They exist. It’s too late for me to join that now.’” “…I never knew about this special English class and it’s a whole operation, like a small microorganism that is operating where actual English professors are tutoring students to write papers…And its like, I had no idea these little gems were in this school…I don know. Its just [that] getting information, I’ve noticed, has been really challenging.”

Bringing in Student Voices IV. Students would prefer to see the same counselor every time and would like to see counselors who specialize in their area of interest or major. Students expressed quite a bit of variation about the quality of support their counselors provided Counseling appointments were too short Counselors have limited specialized knowledge in specific subject areas Counselors weren’t helpful with critical tasks like career exploration, choosing a major or understanding the content of specific courses Information from instructional faculty often complemented what they learned from counseling faculty

Student Quotes “my first year, I just rotated [among] so many different counselors…it was hard for me to just get one concrete thing…” “I was thinking about the [idea of having] counselors who are almost specialized in a certain area…a counselor for the science department, a counselor for the art department, a counselor for , let’s say kinesiology. Or it could be …more general. I feel like it would be a lot more helpful…the students can be guided toward a more specific route rather than such a broad route where they’ll waste more time. “…Since I’ve been here I’ve met with three counselors…two know about as much as I did about the program…They told me , ‘Okay. Well, which one of these classes do you want to take? And all [the course catalog is] showing me is the code and the class. I’m like, ‘Okay. Do I close my eyes and pick one, or…?”

Bringing in Student Voices Students yearn for a sense of community and peer connection at their colleges. They also seek culturally relevant curricula and diversity in their educational experience. Importance of community and the lack of community Connections sought to other students (peers) to gain support and advice especially with similar careers interests or majors (peer to peer mentoring) Appreciation for belonging to certain learning communities where they found culturally relevant curricula, mentoring and helpful resources.

Student Quotes “I feel like one of the biggest things that’s missing is a celebration of culture. Not just ethnic culture but, I mean , even within each major there’s a certain kind of unity….I feel like that would promote education, in general, and [having] students stay on campus…” “One of the things that would help me, I think, is to set up study groups…or even [to have] a classmate is at your level to help you along—somebody you can communicate with and deal with to try to keep you motivated.” “…through my learning community I got to know about so many resources here on campus…” “…when I joined student government, I felt like I was surrounded by people who had similar goals and a similar drive, especially with regards to transferring…and just an overall sense of motivation. And I felt like I had these people to help me to figure out how to get to where I wanted to do, which was really beneficial, but I didn’t even know that we had a student government until last semester.”
