Workshop: Research funding for postgraduate studies and research opportunities for becoming involved Looking forward to sharing and hearing ideas for becoming involved in research itself and involved in influencing funding decisions Audrey Bowen RCSLT September 2012

Rebecca – Models for involvement Caroline - Networks 5 x 5 - Experiences Caroline - RDS & fellowships Audrey - Introduction What might be the types of involvement, the barriers and opportunities Particularly aimed at new people or early career researchers

Good research needs... ... the involvement of all stakeholders: researchers, clinicians, service users, commissioners

... direct/indirect, one/many, various stages Prioritisation Design Funding Recruitment Execution Dissemination Implementation

Different roles in SLT research

Barriers to getting involved

Practising helps

Contribute different knowledge set and skills

From this perception .... to this

Vision "To provide a world class infrastructure for stroke research that supports the delivery of high quality studies which improve the outcomes and quality of life of people with stroke and their carers” Example for own experience of SRN

Clinical Study Groups 6 CSGs Rehabilitation CSG 42 studies (03/12) 12 members, MDT, 3 SLTs, 3 service users Annual budget Annual work plan

CSG activity Support CSG membership feedback on draft applications Monitor Work with portfolio management group Encourage Stimulate Workshops Writing Groups

e.g. rehabilitation potential, aphasia Workshop e.g. rehabilitation potential, aphasia Writing group

Writing Groups: feedback “it gave me the spur to complete the grant application to the deadline… I found the network to be very supportive and received feedback quite quickly (within 2 weeks) which was much faster than the RDS which took 6 weeks to provide feedback…” “the funding was invaluable in enabling team members to work together face-to-face… it made a significant difference to the way the lay members were able to be involved in the process…” “the credibility which this type of development grant brings, should not be under-estimated. .. It is an encouragement to the participants and also gives a degree of external legitimacy… it does provide a built-in obligation to keep going when things get a bit sticky...”
