Ancient Civilizations 5th Grade Social Studies Mrs. Haywood

Focus Egypt, Greece, and Rome Influence on modern political systems, science, religion, the arts, military strategy, agriculture, education, and innovation Text by Suzanne Strauss Art, Way Publishing

“Historians in Training” ask the following questions: Why do we study history and what can we learn from the past? How does our American political and social system fit into our global society? How are religions both unifying and divisive? Why is it important to be globally aware?

Skills: Seek patterns in history rather than viewing history as a group of isolated events, and recognize the interconnections of common themes Express ideas clearly in writing and develop reading strategies Develop and use research skills using the library electronic data base Evaluate the validity of internet sources Cite textual evidence from primary and secondary sources to support conclusions Present research using MLA formatting

Policies Homework is valued at 10% of the grade and is checked during the next class period after it has been assigned. Most homework involves finishing study guides. Students will lose one point for every day it is late. Tests and papers are valued at 40% of students’ grades Quizzes and projects are each worth 25%.
