RECRUITING NEW UNIT LEADERS When we recruit new leaders we often use one of two methods: Thinking of everyone we know who might fit the bill Hoping new Scout joins & family member volunteers Problem with these methods: Do not fill unit’s leadership needs We recruit people not ideal match for position CHEHAW COUNCIL

Step 1: Brief the Chartered Organization & Form a Steering Committee Selection process begins with meeting of: Chartered Organization Rep Pack/Troop/Crew Committee Chair Unit Commissioner Their job is to: Define characteristics they want in new unit leader Select steering committee from Group Committee 13 CHEHAW COUNCIL
Step 1: Brief the Chartered Organization & Form a Steering Committee District Executive: Can provide support materials Can share recruiting techniques & other information Chartered Organization Rep: Has ultimate responsibility for selecting/approving Group leadership Appoints steering committee to recruit new leaders. 14 CHEHAW COUNCIL

Step 2: Meet With The Steering Committee Next, Steering Committee: Approves & ranks prospects Prioritizes top three in preferential order Submits list to head of Chartered Organization for approval before contacting propects Reviews Part 2 of Selecting Quality Leaders video CHEHAW COUNCIL 18
Step 2: Meet With The Steering Committee Steering Committee members should be prepared with answers to possible objections the prospect might raise during their visit. CHEHAW COUNCIL 19

Step 4: Call On The Prospect If top prospect cannot accept, repeat process with #2 prospect Do not be discouraged if prospect turns you down If you exhaust your list of prospects, start process over CHEHAW COUNCIL 30

Step 5: Complete Membership Application Introduce yourself & explain purpose of call Ask how long reference has known prospect & what kind of relationship they have Ask how prospect’s positive attributes could help in leadership role Ask for personal observations, especially interacting with youth CHEHAW COUNCIL 35
Step 5: Complete Membership Application Ask if prospect has any qualities or behaviors related to youth that should cause concern Ask reference if they would feel comfortable with prospect supervising their own child Thank references for their assistance 36 CHEHAW COUNCIL
