Google Classroom Go to Google Classroom and find the Illustrator Workbook. Add your name, current grade and a target for yourself.

What can you remember? 1. What word would you use to describe this type of colouring? 4. You would find these at the top of the screen. Explain what each one changes a. b. 2. What range of tools would you find in this menu? 5. What does the opacity change? 6. When I draw a shape this appears at the top. If I changed it to 10pt what would happen to the shape? 3. This is the square tool. What would you do to this to access more shapes?

What can you remember? 1. Gradient 4a. The inside colour of the shape 4b. The line/outside colour a. b. 2. Symbols 5. How see-through or transparent something is 6. The line would get thicker 3. Press and hold the mouse over it

Lesson Objectives To recap basic shape and drawing tools To learn how to create compound shapes, and edit shapes Lesson Outcomes All students will have demonstrated how to edit shapes using the shape builder, path finder and add gradients. Most students will be able to create the shapes on the left independently Some students will be able to create the shapes on the right independently.

Task 1: Recreate this image on Illustrator An 8 pointed star Yellow fill colour Red line colour with thickness of 5

Task 2: Editing shapes Sometimes we don’t want perfect shapes like stars or rectangles. A lot of the time we want something bespoke or original to make our designs stand out. An easy way of doing this is to create a compound shape. This is where you layer up shapes and then join them all together. Add an ellipse over your star shape. It doesn’t matter if its filled with colour or not.

Highlight both shapes (by dragging your mouse over them or pressing CTRL +A Use the shape builder tool and drag your mouse over each part of the image. It will join them together.

Small edits to shapes The white arrow is perfect to move around nodes on a shape. With this tool you can drag small areas into the perfect position 1. Click the white arrow. 2. Click the node that you want to edit 3. Click and drag it into a new position. (if it drags the whole shape you haven’t selected it first)

Can you create these shapes? Not too sure yet? Try this one Super confident? Push yourself with this one It doesn’t matter which one you choose as long as the end result is accurate!

Path Finder The path finder tool allows us to slide, chop and punch through shapes. This means we have a lot more control over our paths. Open the path finder tool and create two circles like these.

Create these 3 shapes using the path finder tool UNITE This tool is the same as the shape builder. It joins shapes together. MINUS FRONT This tool deletes the top shape from the bottom shape INTERSECT This tool keeps the shape where the two shapes overlap.

Using the pathfinder tools can you create these images? Not too sure.. Give this one a go. Super confident? Push yourself with this one!

Take your shapes and apply suitable gradients to make them look effective.

In your classroom work book Print screen your final image, either the sunshine or person. Next to your image explain which level you think you are based on what you have made today. Explain why you think this. In order to achieve a level you need to have shown you do the skill on your own WITHOUT help from a teacher or a friend. How did you draw a perfect circle   How did you make your shapes (joins, cut-outs) How did you colour it in? Year 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Shapes Can alter the inside/outside colour and line thickness of a shape Can draw shapes which have various different number of sides Can create a compound shape using the shape builder tool Can create an effective compound shape using the path finder tool which enhances the design
