Spatial Data on the Web : Making data discoverable through mainstream search engines 48th MIG-T meeting 11-12 April 2018, Ispra

Background Spatial data on the Web document Introductory presentation Question : Do we need to make our data “more” discoverable through mainstream search engines

Approach : Schema.org Advantage : data is better indexed => more prominent in search results Use Case w added value : Increase visibility of data Increase usability of data How Standardised schema.org But there are other options (sitemaps, Dublin Core, Geo V domain, landing pages …)

Actions What is being done ? In MS (Poland, France, Sweden, Netherlands, … ) OGC – W3C Software providers – e.g. Geonetwork Way forward : Best practices Proof of concept Extend work by MS Are there examples of use of Schema.org in (Geospatial) domains ?

Thoughts Level ? Dataset vs object but also European vs national portal Combination of actions – this could be a complement API over MD => data already gets indexed => this is extra There are different levels of users => who will it benefit This is not an answer to the education of users (on data quality) There is no guarantee of clarity of what users will get (will it help when faced with 3p of links ?) Schema.org is already incorporated in Geonetwork – should we provide a standardised mapping for others ? Ethics If seen as complement (vs lock in) there would be no problem – way to re-use what we have If you have open data => this should not be a problem
