Bell Work 1. What is 50% of 130? 2. What is the difference between 33,000 and 59,000? 3. What is the decimal for 4,000 26,000 , rounded to the nearest hundredth? 4. What is 0.15 written as a percent? Answers: 1. 0.50 x 130 = 65 2. 26,000 (Difference indicates a subtraction problem) 3. 0.15 (divide 4,000 by 26,000 and round to the nearest hundredth) 4. 15% (move decimal 2 places to the right and add a % sign)

OBJECTIVE Topic: Percent of Change – Increase and Decrease – as it applies to career choice based upon education level. Do: Students will discover the percent of change between salaries for career choices based upon level of education. Level of Thinking: Applying

Vocabulary Certification/Credential – Documentation of a qualification or skill, issued by a third party, usually taking less than two years to earn. Associate’s Degree – A degree earned after a two-year course of study, usually awarded by a community college, technical college or junior college. Bachelor’s Degree – A degree earned for an undergraduate course of study that normally requires three to five years of study, usually awarded by a university. Master’s Degree – A degree earned for a graduate course of study in a specialized area that normally requires two additional years of study beyond a Bachelor’s Degree. Difference – The result of a subtraction problem. Percent of Change – A ratio that compares the change in quantity to the original amount. Can be an increase or decrease, depending on whether the amount increases or decreases from the original amount. Talk about each of these vocabulary words and have students write them in their own words on the note sheet.

Annual Salaries – Partner Share Discuss the following questions with the person next to you What is an annual salary? What is the difference between annual salary and hourly wage? Which do you think would help you earn a larger annual salary – an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree? Why? Have students discuss this amongst themselves, then discuss as a class. Then lead the discussion into the math application of finding the percent of change between different salaries.

Evaluating Percent of Change Example 1 The price of a circular saw in 2016 was $89. This week, Home Depot advertised circular saws for $119. What is the percent of change in the price of a circular saw? Is this an increase or decrease?

Step One The price of a circular saw in 2016 was $89. This week, Home Depot advertised circular saws for $119. What is the percent of change in the price of a circular saw? Is this an increase or decrease? Find the difference between the original (beginning) price and the ending price. You can always have the student subtract the smaller number from the larger number. We will decide at the end whether the number represents an increase (+) or a decrease (-) 119 – 89 = 30

Step Two Substitute values into the following ratio: 𝟑𝟎 𝟖𝟗 The price of a circular saw in 2016 was $89. This week, Home Depot advertised circular saws for $119. What is the percent of change in the price of a circular saw? Is this an increase or decrease? Substitute values into the following ratio: 𝟑𝟎 𝟖𝟗 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 =

Step Three 0.34 𝟑𝟎 𝟖𝟗 = Change the ratio to a decimal by dividing : The price of a circular saw in 2016 was $89. This week, Home Depot advertised circular saws for $119. What is the percent of change in the price of a circular saw? Is this an increase or decrease? Change the ratio to a decimal by dividing : 30 divided by 89. 𝟑𝟎 𝟖𝟗 = 0.34

Step Four The price of a circular saw in 2016 was $89. This week, Home Depot advertised circular saws for $119. What is the percent of change in the price of a circular saw? Is this an increase or decrease? Change 0.34 to a percentage and decide if this represents an increase or a decrease. 34 % increase, because the ending price is more than the original price.

Evaluating Percent of Change Example 2 Average Price of a Gallon of Gas June 2.70 August 2.55 October 2.25 What is the percent of change in the price of gasoline from June to October? Is this an increase or decrease?

Average Price of a Gallon of Gas Step One Average Price of a Gallon of Gas June 2.70 August 2.55 October 2.25 What is the percent of change in the price of gasoline from June to October? Is this an increase or decrease? Find the difference between the original (beginning) price and the ending price. 2.70 – 2.25 = .45

Average Price of a Gallon of Gas Step Two Average Price of a Gallon of Gas June 2.70 August 2.55 October 2.25 What is the percent of change in the price of gasoline from June to October? Is this an increase or decrease? 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 = .𝟒𝟓 𝟐.𝟕𝟎 Substitute values into the following ratio:

Average Price of a Gallon of Gas Step Three Average Price of a Gallon of Gas June 2.70 August 2.55 October 2.25 What is the percent of change in the price of gasoline from June to October? Is this an increase or decrease? Change the ratio to a decimal by dividing .45 by 2.70 = 0.17 (Rounded to the nearest hundredth)

Average Price of a Gallon of Gas Step Four Average Price of a Gallon of Gas June 2.70 August 2.55 October 2.25 What is the percent of change in the price of gasoline from June to October? Is this an increase or decrease? Change 0.17 to a percentage and decide if this represents an increase or a decrease. 17 % decrease, because the ending price is less than the original price.

Average Price of a Gallon of Gas Extension Average Price of a Gallon of Gas June 2.70 August 2.55 October 2.25 What is the percent of change in the price of gasoline from June to October? Is this an increase or decrease? Can you find the percent of change between June and August and decide if it is a percent increase or a percent decrease? 6% decrease, because the August price is less than the original price.

Application Turn to page 3 of the note sheet and complete the activity there: Choose one job from each education level Write the job and salary in the spaces provided Find the percent increase or decrease between each level. Talk to students about which level of education would come first as a reminder so they can decide if they have an increase or decrease.

What Did YOU Learn?? On the second page of your note sheet, do your best to explain in words how to find a percent increase or decrease.
