The coordinate plane is formed by the intersection of two number lines.
Origin, the point where the two number lines intersect y-axis, it is the vertical number line x x-axis, it is the horizontal number line
You can graph points on the coordinate plane. A point has two coordinates which form an ordered pair. The x coordinate tells how far to move left or right along the x- axis. (3, -4) The y coordinate tells how far to move up or down along the y-axis.
Example 1 What are the coordinates of point A? Move up from the x axis. The y coordinate is 4. What are the coordinates of point A? A The coordinates for point A are (2, 4). Start at the origin. Move 2 units to the right. The x coordinate is 2.
Example 2 B What are the coordinates of point B? Move 5 units left from the origin. The x coordinate is -5. What are the coordinates of point B? Move down from the x axis to point B. The y coordinate is -2. The coordinates for point B are (-5, -2). B
C D B F E A A (-7, 4) B (3, -3) C (3, 0) D (7, 1) E (0, -7) F (-6, -4) Practice Write the ordered pair for each point. A A (-7, 4) B (3, -3) C (3, 0) D (7, 1) E (0, -7) F (-6, -4) C D B F E
The coordinate plane is divided into four quadrants. Quadrant II Quadrant I Quadrant III Quadrant IV
Example 3 In which quadrant is point C located? C Quadrant III
Example 4 In which quadrant is point D located? Quadrant IV D
A B C D E II I III IV A D B C E Practice Identify the quadrant in which each point lies. A B C D E II I III IV A D B C E
Where is ordered pair F located? pair G located? (-7, 0) on x axis (0, 4) on y axis
Closure What are the signs for all of the x-coordinates and all of the y-coordinates of the ordered pairs in the second quadrant? x negatives, y positives
