Graphing / Plotting Points Review

Parts of the Coordinate Plane y - axis This entire graph is called a coordinate plane x – axis

Ordered Pairs Any point on the coordinate plane can be described by an ordered pair. Ordered pairs are written as (x , y ) The x value is called the x – coordinate The y value is called the y – coordinate

The coordinate plane can be divided into 4 quadrants. Quadrant I Positive x Positive y Quadrant II Negative x Positive y Quadrant III Negative x Negative y Quadrant IV Positive x Negative y

Plotting Points To graph (plot) a point: 1. Start at the origin (0,0). 2. Look at the x-coordinate - if it is positive, move right - if it is negative, move left 3. Look at the y-coordinate - if it is positive, move up - if it is negative, move down

Example: Plot the point (2, -5) Steps: 1. Start at (0,0) 2. x-coordinate is positive, so move right 3. y-coordinate is negative so move down Now you have plotted the point (2, -5)!

Example: Write the ordered pair for the point given. Steps: 1. Start at (0,0) 2. Find the x-coordinate (move right or left) 3. Find the y-coordinate (move up or down) (-3, -4)

Example: Plot the following points and name the quadrant they are in. 1. (-4, 2) Quadrant II 2. (3, 5) Quadrant I 3. (-2, -3) Quadrant III 4. (4, -1) Quadrant IV

Write the ordered pair for each point and the quadrant it is located in. 1. (-4, -5) Quadrant III 3 2 2. (-1, 3) Quadrant II 3. (1, 4) Quadrant I 4 4. (3, 0) No Quadrant 5 5. (5, -2) Quadrant IV 1
