Lesson 11.7 Slope-Intercept Form Essential Question: How do you write and graph equations in slope-intercept form?

Before we start… Make a table of values for the equation 𝑦=4𝑥+3 Plot the points and draw a line. Use the graph to find the slope and the y-intercept.

What is slope-intercept form? y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept of the equation’s graph.

An equation needs to be in slope-intercept form to identify the slope and y-intercept. If it is not, you have to rewrite the equation by solving for y.

Identify the slope and y-intercept

Identify the slope and y-intercept

Identify the slope and y-intercept

Identify the slope and y-intercept

Identify the slope and y-intercept

How do I graph an equation in slope-intercept form? Make sure the equation is in slope-intercept form y = mx + b Identify the y-intercept and plot it. Identify the slope. Use the slope to plot another point. Draw a line through your points.

Graph 𝑦= 1 2 𝑥+3

Graph 𝑦=5𝑥

How do you write an equation in slope-intercept form? Use the form 𝑦=𝑚𝑥+𝑏 Replace m with the rate of change (slope). Replace b with the initial condition (y-intercept).

The temperature changes at a rate of -0.005°F per foot of elevation as you hike up. What is the temperature 1000 feet above the base?

Snake A 7 foot long python is growing 1 2 foot per year Snake A 7 foot long python is growing 1 2 foot per year. Write an equation for its length in x years. What is its length in 10 years?

Canoe Rental You pay $9 per hour to rent a canoe Canoe Rental You pay $9 per hour to rent a canoe. The cost for a ride back to the starting point is $12. Write an equation for the cost of renting a canoe. How much will you pay to rent a canoe for 5 hours?
