Things to have in school Water bottle – named Reading book and reading record Coat – waterproof and named PE Kit – check feet size

‘Children need to learn to read before they can read to learn.’ Reading Children should try to read everyday to an adult at home. The adult should comment and sign the reading record every time you hear them. There is no set book change day and children should try to read each book twice, for fluency, before changing it. The children need to bring their book and reading record in daily and put it in the box in their classroom. We check the reading records daily for progress towards the Cage Green Reading Awards. ‘Children need to learn to read before they can read to learn.’

Phonics Screening Check Year 1 children take part in a Phonics screening check in June. This will involve reading both real and non-real words. Non-real words are also called ‘alien’, ‘monster’ or ‘nonsense’ words. Reading these words allows children to demonstrate their phonic ability. Children know they are non-real words as they are presented with an image of an ‘alien’ next to them. Some homework set this year will link to this to help children at home. Children that do not meet the pass mark threshold will be screened again at the end of year 2.

Expectations and Rewards In Year 1 the expectation will still be high. We promote independence and children having opportunities to become more responsible. Children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and be motivated to challenge themselves. Children can be rewarded with house points individually. We have a ‘Reward Jar’ as a whole class reward system. This is linked with our class and school rules and when it is full, the children will decide on their group reward.

Thank you for coming.
