What is a settlement?

Settlement- a place where people live e.g. town, city, village

In this topic we will explore how settlements have developed, grown and changed. We will investigate how this affects different settlements in different ways. We will test how suitable the burgess model is for todays settlements. We will then look at the impacts internet shopping has on the high street.

What factors affect settlements? Lesson 1 Lesson Objectives:- To gain an understanding of the factors resulting in establishing settlements. Lesson Outcomes By the end of today’s lesson students will be able to:- Outline a number of factors that affect where people settle Analyse factors that affect where people settle and decide which is the most important

Natural factors influencing settlement site. You are an early settler before the times of nice homes with running water and heating. What natural factors would influence where you would build your settlement? Key words Early settler- someone who created the first places where people live. Settlement- a place where people live e.g. town, city, village. Forests (trees) for fire wood. Natural factors influencing settlement site.

Natural site factors The site -is the actual place where a settlement such as a village or town grew up. Building materials Needed wood or stone. Useful to be near a wood or rocky hill side. Shelter A south facing slope will have more sun and protection from the wind. Trees can also provide protection. Protection Good views from the hill top give you warning if you are about to be attacked. Question- Would any of these not be relevant today? What would people be looking for now, when choosing somewhere to live? Water Needed for drinking, cooking and washing. Too much can cause flooding. Wood Need for fires to keep warm and to cook on. Rivers Easy to cross either on foot or by a bridge. Flat land Easier to build on, grow crops and travel to other towns.

Which factor is the most important? Now 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Early Settler 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 = most important 7= least important Give a reason for the most and least important factor

Which of the factors are not important today and why? I think _________ is not important because...

What would people be looking for now, when choosing somewhere to live? I think people would look for _______ because...
