Societies of West Africa and Europe Chapter One Section Two

Africa in 1500 Largely Muslim Linked with Europe and the Indies through trade

Africa in 1500 African wealth from gold and salt trade Slave trade thriving throughout Africa, Europe, and the Middle East

Changes in Europe Growth of feudalism after the European Middle Ages ends Europeans stage the Crusades to convert Muslims of southwest Asia to Christianity

Changes in Europe Growth of trade and towns weakened the feudal system. Bubonic plague beginning in 1347 killed thousands of serfs, or workers. As feudal lords lost power, kings grew stronger.

The Renaissance and Reformation Reformation – movement to correct problems in the church. Ultimately led to a split in Roman Catholic Church – Catholics and Protestants Renaissance – a time of increased interest in art and learning. Led to a desire to explore and expand.

Changes in trade European demand for Asian goods increases after Crusades Italy dominates trade due to network developed during Crusades. Other European nations want share of Italian trade profits. Other nations seek water route to Asia.
