Deadliest Mass Shooting in Modern US History

More than 50 people were killed and at least 400 others injured after a gunman opened fire Sunday night on a crowd of about 30,000 people at a country music festival in Las Vegas. Country music singer Jason Aldean was performing when the gunshots began. Police said the suspect, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, was killed after a SWAT team burst into the hotel room from which he was firing at the crowd. Authorities are currently saying that he killed himself. “Right now we believe it’s a solo act, a lone wolf attacker,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joe Lombardo said. “We are pretty confident there is no longer a threat.” Authorities said the gunman appeared to have begun firing at 10:08 p.m. from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel toward the concert venue across the street. Inside his room, they found a cache of weapons, including 10 rifles. As of this morning, authorities have no evidence of a motive. Video posted on social media showed the open-air concert fully underway when bursts of automatic gunfire rang out in rapid succession.

In Other News The nine member Supreme Court will take the bench Monday for what could be the most consequential term in decades, as the ideologically split justices consider cases as diverse as religious liberty, immigration, cell phone privacy, voting rights and possibly the legality of President Donald Trump's controversial travel ban. There are five conservatives and four liberals on the bench. After serving nine years for a Las Vegas kidnapping and armed robbery, O.J. Simpson left prison early Sunday. Simpson's parole plan was agreed upon at Lovelock Correctional Center prior to his release. The specific plans were not provided.
