Test Review Fine Arts

7 Elements of Art

An element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched. Texture

Examples of Texture A texture is usually described as smooth or rough, soft or hard, coarse of fine, matt or glossy, and etc. Texture is divided into two categories, namely, tactile and visual textures. Tactile textures refer to the immediate tangible feel of a surface. Visual textures refer to the visual impression that textures produce to human observer, which are related to local spatial variations of simple stimuli like color, orientation and intensity in an image.

Visual Texture

Tactile Texture

An element of art by which positive and negative areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work of art. Space

An element of art made up of three properties: hue, value, and intensity. Color

The lightness or darkness of tones or colors The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray. Value

An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width. You can have geometric and organic. Shape

An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width AND depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may also be free flowing. Form

An element of art defined by a point moving in space An element of art defined by a point moving in space. Line may be two-or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract. Line

The 8 Elements of Composition in Art

Occurs when all of the elements of a piece combine to make a balanced, harmonious, complete whole. Do all the parts of the composition feel as if they belong together, or does something feel stuck on, awkwardly out of place? Unity or Harmony

A sense that the painting "feels right" and not heavier on one side A sense that the painting "feels right" and not heavier on one side. Having a symmetrical arrangement adds a sense of calm, whereas an asymmetrical arrangement creates a more dynamic feeling. A painting that is not ______________ creates a sense of unease. Balance

In much the same way music does, a piece of art can have a ______________ that leads your eye to view the artwork at a certain pace. Look for the large underlying shapes (squares, triangles, etc.) and repeated color. Rhythm or Repetition

There are many ways to give a sense of ________ in a painting, such as the arrangement of objects, the position of figures, the flow of a river. You can use leading lines (a photography term applicable to painting) to direct the viewer's eye into and around the painting. Leading lines can be actual lines, such as the lines of a fence or railroad, or they can be implied lines, such as a row of trees or curve of stones or circles. Movement

The viewer's eye ultimately wants to rest on the "most important" thing or focal point in the painting, otherwise the eye feels lost, wandering around in space Focus or Emphasis

Paintings with high contrast - strong differences between light and dark, for example - have a different feel than paintings with minimal contrast in light and dark. In addition to light and dark,  _______ can be differences in shape, color, size, texture, type of line, etc.   Contrast

How things fit together and relate to each other in terms of size and scale; whether big or small, nearby or distant. Proportion

A regular repetition of lines, shapes, colors, or values in a composition Pattern
