Scientific Method Steps Problem (Research) Hypothesis Experiment Analysis Conclusion

Problem/Research/Hypothesis Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. Hypothesis format: If the workers use the special juice, then their productivity will increase (# of stacks of paper).

Experiment He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice.

Analyze After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks Group B made 2,113 stacks.

Conclusion Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group A made 1,587 stacks Group B is not given the special juice. Group B made 2,113 stacks. Therefore, we can conclude…

Conclusion The special juice does not seem to improve productivity. It actually seems to make it worse!

Controls & Experimenting Control Group: Group B (not given the special juice) Experimental Group: Group A (given the special juice)

Identifying the Variables: Independent Variable: The special juice Dependent Variable: # of stacks of paper made

Line graphs- show change over time (2 sets of # data) Bar graphs- graph amount of something in different categories (1 number, 1 category)
