WHY ENGLISH CAN TAKE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO!

Hi I am Prof. Molly Brown. I’m the Head of the English Department and I look forward to having you as one of our students this year. I hope the following slides will show you why English is a good choice for you and also which English course will be best for you.

SOME FUN FACTS There are 335 million people who speak English as a first language and an additional 505 million people worldwide who speak it as a second language. The British Council claims that 25 per cent of the world's population has some understanding of English. In 2014 there were more than 28 million books in print that were written in English. 55% of the internet is in English. The second most popular internet language is Russian at just under 6%. In South Africa the best predictor of university success regardless of field of study is the matric English mark.

The UP English Department is ranked among the 200 best English Departments in the world in the QS rankings. We have a lively, supportive postgraduate community and a monthly research seminar. We have the most diverse Honours syllabus in the country We have particular expertise in early modern literature, eighteenth-century literature, Modernism, African literature, children’s literature, creative writing, editing, TESOL and contemporary fantasy and science fiction. Our staff members have degrees from a range of leading universities including Oxford. And a number of our students have gone on to study successfully abroad.
