Kinds of Nouns Noun: a person, place, thing or idea Common noun: general name for a person, place thing or idea Proper noun: the name of a particular person, place, thing or idea Concrete noun: something that can be seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched Abstract noun: names an idea, feeling, quality or characteristic Collective noun: names a group of people or things

All nouns are either common or proper AND concrete or abstract. Type of Noun Example common noun school proper noun Norup International School concrete noun classroom abstract noun education collective noun class All nouns are either common or proper AND concrete or abstract.

Singular & Plural Nouns Singular noun: one person, place, thing or idea Plural noun: more than one person, place, thing or idea Singular Noun Plural Noun school schools

Making Nouns Plural

Possessive Nouns Possessive noun: shows ownership or relationship

Compound Nouns Compound noun: made up of two or more words used together as a single noun. Single word (toothpaste) Two or more separate words (street lamp) Hyphenated word (passer-by)

Nouns as Subjects & Complements Subject noun: tells whom or what the sentence is about (who or what is completing the action) The teacher is trying to t each grammar. Subject complement: completes the meaning of the sentence (usually comes after the verb)

Nouns in Phrases Object of a preposition: noun or pronoun that follows the preposition (from, of, at, near, etc.). I live close to the store. Appositive: noun or pronoun that identifies/ renames another noun or pronoun. My mom, a very nice lady, is coming to visit. Appositive phrase: an appositive phrase and its modifiers.
